Long story short:
Came home from work to find my room filled with thick black smoke. It wasn't hard to discover the source: my laptop was sitting there, a destroyed, melted mess basically fused to the desk. After about 40 hours of cleaning every item I own my room is almost back to normal. Surprisingly the only ruined items were the desk, 2 cables running near the laptop, some cheap PC speakers and obviously the laptop.
Notes:
1. Laptop is about 7 years old.
2. As far as I remember I bought it new from a local retailer.
3. The only issues it's had related to overheating or the battery is the left side of the bottom (I'm assuming this is the processor area) would some times become hot if I had it resting on a cloth surface. I easily remedied this by either resting it on a solid surface like a desk or if it was in my lap I would place it on it's soft case with the left side hanging off for ventilation.
4. The laptop was left off with the lid down but it was plugged in.
