So I have a 5 year old pavilion dv6 with Xubuntu installed, but the battery isn't working properly. Whenever I plug the AC adapter in, it shows it as charging. When I remove the AC adapter, the laptop shuts off even when it is fully charged and won't turn on without the AC adapter. I don't know if it is because of the battery, AC adapter, or the laptop itself. All I know is that the battery used to work properly but not anymore. Thanks for helping me out!

5 year old laptop...battery trouble. Odds are almost but not quite 100% you just need a new battery. If the AC adapter powers the laptop with the battery out then it is not the adapter.
Lots of dv6 models so we can help you to find that new battery better if we knew exactly which dv6 you have.

But if I remove the battery, it says it is running on AC power. The battery still charges but when the AC adapter is removed it instantly turns off. The battery still produces heat so it should be a setting that I accidently turned off.
(This is the model that I have)

Models look very similar so the picture is interesting but not really helping. Model number should be on a tag inside the battery bay. Nothing you are telling me is persuading me it is anything other than a battery that needs to be replaced.
