Hi, i'm reviving an old laptop for my 6year old to play with. I cannot boot from the dvd optical drive (f9, select boot from dvd but nothing happens and yes the dvd is bootable!). I can see the dvd once I'm booted into windows 7.
i'd like to update the bios. I can't seem to find the bios update files anywhere. I understand I have to run the bios update from windows Vista. Is there a way to update the bios from a dos boot (boot from usb and run an executable in a dos env?)

Hi:
I doubt a BIOS update is going to fix that problem. There is probably something else wrong.
In any event, here is the latest BIOS revision for that model.
WinFlash for HP Notebook System BIOS (with Intel Processor)
Version=F.5A
This package contains the WinFlash utility and a System BIOS image for the listed notebook models and operating systems. The WinFlash utilit y is used to locally flash the System BIOS (ROM) on notebooks operating in a Microsoft Windows environment.

Here is a process another forum member used to update the BIOS on a dv6500 model with the AMD processor and nVidia chipset.
You would have to check the above BIOS file and ensure it has the same WPH files.
They will of course, have different file names.
This may be as risky as running the BIOS update in Windows.
1) download CRISDISK: http://www.mediafire.com/file/ywzzkjjmjjz/CRISDISK.zip
2) use a usb formatted as fat32, 16kb allocation unit size. Do not perform quick format. I used a common 8gb usb pendrive
3) extract the sp52477 with winrar or similar software.
4) look for the file 30CFF34A.WPH this is the correct bios for this device
5) renale this file as BIOS.WPH, unzip the CRISDISK and copy this file into the CRISDISK folder
6) attach the formatted USB and run WINCRIS as administrator. click start and wait that the procedure is finished
7) attach the USB to the port close to the ac cable. Hold win + B and press power button for 2 seconds. release power button but keep held the other two buttons for other 1 or 2 seconds
😎 computer will start to emitt several beeps for 3 minutes until it will shut down by itself
9) remove ac usb and battery from the pc. Insert again battery and ac then power on the pc
I have read posts where folks with the dv6xxx Intel models were able to update the BIOS when running W7 with no issues.
I cannot advise you do do that, but if you can't find another way to update the BIOS when not in Windows, it may be your only choice other than to reinstall Vista.
I know if the dv6xxx models with the nvidia chipsets and AMD processors, updating the BIOS when running W7 is instant death to the notebook, and that is why the person where I copied and pasted these instructions from, found this method to recover the BIOS from a failed BIOS update when running windows.

You're very welcome.
One less thing to be concerned with.
Unfortunately, I don't know what to do about not being able to boot from the DVD drive.
It could be anything from a bad motherboard, to a partially defective DVD drive.
