HP Pavilion Notebook - 17-g149cy (Touch) (ENERGY STAR)
Good evening,

Back around 2015 a friend purchased an HP Pavilion Notebook - 17-g149cy with touch screen off one of the shopping tv networks. The laptop has sat in the box for all these years until last week. She has somehow gotten by using just her iPhone. Just over a year ago, she was diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease and now very much needs a larger screen /keyboard, etc.

I am trying to get the laptop set up, updated, and in good working order. The biggest issue is the CPU is extremely slow by today's standard and is not supported by Windows 11. The rest of the specifications are excellent aside from needing a battery and the addition of Bluetooth. So, I am trying to find out if 1) the CPU can be upgraded or is it tied into the motherboard and 2) If it can be upgraded, what can it be upgraded to, and 3) can I do the work? (I have tinkered in both desktops and notebooks previously changing out RAM/hard drives, and similar things.)

Any recommendations and suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you for reading.!

Hi:

The processor is an integral part of the motherboard and cannot be upgraded.

You can install up to 2 x 8 GB of DDR3L-1600 memory and that should help as well as replacing the 2.5" mechanical hard drive with a better performing 2.5" solid state drive (SSD).

Below is the link to the service manual.

HP Pavilion Notebook 17Models 17-g000 – 17-g099AMD Models Maintenance and Service Guide

This should be a compatible 8 GB memory chip for your notebook:

Amazon.com: Crucial RAM 8GB DDR3 1600 MHz CL11 Laptop Memory CT102464BF160B : Everything Else

If you are interested in installing W11 on your PC as is, you can read this discussion for how I upgraded several HP and Dell notebook and desktop PC's that did not meet the W11 hardware requirements to W11 22H2.

It was easy.

You're very welcome.

For a solid-state drive (you don't need to install a 1 TB size if you can live with less space), I recommend one of these models:

However, I selected the 1 TB  capacities.

Amazon.com: SanDisk Ultra 3D NAND 1TB Internal SSD - SATA III 6 Gb/s, 2.5 Inch /7 mm, Up to 560 MB/s...

Amazon.com: Western Digital 1TB WD Blue SA510 SATA Internal Solid State Drive SSD - SATA III 6 Gb/s,...

Paul,

Thank you so very much for your expertise and recommendations! I am humbled to be the recipient of your time and knowledge.

I wish more folks across our country could see helping others as you obviously do. What a positive change it would make to our "me first I'm entitled, and you are less" country.

Blessings.
