Your laptop was delivered with a 512 GB PCIe® NVMe™ M.2 SSD.
You can replace that with up to a 2TB PCIe® NVMe™ M.2 SSD and clone the original installation to the new SSD before installation. You could also use the HP Cloud recovery to install a fresh Windows installation.
My own preference is Samsung, but less expensive PCIe® NVMe™ M.2 SSD products are available. ( Crucial, Kingston and others)

That is the generally accepted limit of storage capacity for a laptop.
Yes you must replace it with the new SSD.
You can put the original SSD in an enclosure with USB 3.0 connectivity and use it as an external storage device

If you clone the original SSD to the new one, you will not lose any apps or documents.

Since you have a laptop, you will need an external adapter for the SSD type of your choice.
Just do a search for USB external M.2 SSD adapter or USB SATA3 SSD adapter in a search engine online.
