Hi greenlucy,

I saw your post about your unfortunate situation. I'm sorry to tell you that at this point the only way to retrieve that data would be take the external hard drive to a professional. They may be able to retrieve some of the data for you.

In the future in the I would recommend either creating a restore point so that if there is a problem you can return to that state data and all or create a set of recovery CDs. I have include a link below that will show you how to do that.

Using Microsoft System Restore:

Creating Recovery Disc or Saving a Recovery Image to a USB Drive:

Hi @sivaout,

Good Day.   Thank you for stopping by the HP forums. I reviewed the post about the external Hp hard drive not working. I will be glad to assist you here. Superb effort and great description of the

  • Did it stop working after e recent software or Windows update?
  • Have you tried it on a different computer?

For a start, please try these steps:

  • Go to start, right click on Computer, select manage, select disc management.
  • The next column on the left will show all drives with their corresponding letter. The external hard drive may not show any letter assigned to it.
  • Right click over where the drive letter should appear and select Change drive letter and path. Select whatever letter that you want to call it and click OK.
  • It should now be recognized.

If this does not work, then please connect the external hard drive to a different computer (at the office or at a library)  and check if it works. If it does not work on a different computer, then the external hard drive is faulty.

Please contact HP phone support to get it replaced or serviced from this link: http://hp.com/contacthp

Please select the country and follow the on-screen instructions. They will be happy to assist you immediately. If the unit is under warranty repair services is taken care of by the manufacturer’s warranty

Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great.

To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Take care now and have a superb week ahead. 🙂
