I acquired this from a friend. I formatted its C: drive.  I installed a generic Windows 7 64bit Windows from DVD. So far so good.

The ethernet and WIFI however do not work. System information about network adaptor tells me that Adapter Type is "not available" and also not available are all sorts of its characteristics, like IP info, DHCP info...

How do I find out what Ethernet/WIFI hardware I have on this thing and so what derivers I need? And where to get them?

Thankyou,

peter

Hello.

Start by identifying your laptop model first. HP has had several different Pavilion models and they have different network adapters inside.

There should be a P/N product number printed on the laptop chassis along with serial number. The p/n and s/n are also listed in BIOS settings, which you can enter by repeatedly pressing ESC key when the computer starts. You can also get the serial number in Windows command line by entering the command wmic bios get serialnumber

Use the HP partsurfer website to get your laptop model from the product number or serial number.

With this information you should find the correct download page for your laptop at support.hp.com.

Hi, Peter:

HP has retired support for all g6 model series PC's since they have reached 10 years of age.

There are no support pages for the model series anymore, or you will get one that shows the message as in this most recent g6 model series:

HP Pavilion g6-2300sy Notebook PC Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support

"There is no software or drivers available for your product."

All g6 notebooks use the Realtek ethernet controller drivers, so here is a W7 driver that should work for your notebook.

Realtek Ethernet Controller Drivers

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp63001-63500/sp63213.exe

When the Wi-Fi adapter needs a driver, there will be a device listed in the device manager labeled as a Network Controller.

Find the network controller device and post the hardware ID for it and I will post the link to the W7 Wi-Fi driver you need.

Use this guide for how to find the hardware ID for a device:

How to Find Drivers for Unknown Devices in the Device Manager

Jupitero, I did as you suggested and HP PartSurfer came back with:

"

Serial Number :  5CD22167T4

Product Number :  B6J45EA#ABU
Description :  Pavilion g6
ROHS Status :  Not Assigned

  • Advanced(Unique Product S/N)

  Component BOM (OEM S/N BOM)
No additional information found in PartSurfer.

Spare BOM (HP Orderable Product BOM)

No additional information found in PartSurfer.
"
I went to support.hp.com and got, upon entering serial and model:
"
There is no software or drivers available for your product.
"
What next? Should I do what Paul_Tikkanen suggests?
Thanks,
peter

Hi, Peter:

As I replied earlier, HP has retired support for your PC since it is more than 10 years old.

That's why you can't find any drivers for it on the HP support site.

We are currently not allowed to post links to third party driver sites.

However, I don't see anything improper with letting you know that the DriversCollection.com website has the drivers for your PC.

I use the site all the time and the drivers are legitimate and virus free.

Just do a search for your HP Pavilion g6-1394sa drivers and include in the search the Driverscollection website name and you will be able to find the drivers HP used to supply.

I've already given you the ethernet driver link.

I believe that your notebook uses this Wi-Fi driver:

MediaTek (Ralink) 802.11 b/g/n Wireless LAN Adapter Driver

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp71001-71500/sp71421.exe

Very useful, Mr Tikkanen.

At the risk of being a pain, can I further ask you a couple of further questions?

I have 6 pages of drivers  of all sorts for my laptop in Windows 7 64bit. at https://driverscollection.com/?H=Pavilion%20g6-1394sa&By=HP&SS=Windows%207%2064-bit.

Which should I download? All Ralink drivers? any others? Would it be ok or even desirable to download ALL the drivers? Is there an easy way to command "download all"?

Continuing gratitude,

peter

HP Recommended

Download the Ralink Wi-Fi driver I posted for you because it is newer than the one on the driverscollection site.

You should begin with the obvious drivers that would need to be installed:

Graphics

Audio

Ethernet

Touchpad

SD card reader

Then you can install any other software you feel would be useful to you.

If you need help finding drivers just let me know what the Windows device description is for the device needing a driver in the device manager.

Hi Peter,

A driver download page for your laptop still exists at HP support site:

https://support.hp.com/gb-en/drivers/hp-pavilion-g6-1300-notebook-pc-series/5186808

HP support website unfortunately works intermittently so try reloading the page for a few times or try loading it in a private/incognito window if the page refuses to load. I'll copy the links here for the drivers you probably need.

Like Mr.Tikkanen said, the only LAN option is Realtek. If the already mentioned driver package does not work, download the official package from here: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp55001-55500/sp55083.exe

Audio driver: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp59001-59500/sp59154.exe

Intel chipset driver: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp52501-53000/sp52791.exe

Intel Management Engine driver: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp52501-53000/sp52794.exe

AMD graphics driver: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp55001-55500/sp55081.exe

Touchpad driver: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp54001-54500/sp54040.exe

Realtek Card Reader driver: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp55001-55500/sp55085.exe

If the volume or brightness buttons on your keyboard don't work out of the box, you may need to install the HP Quick Launch software: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp56501-57000/sp56929.exe

You can check Windows Update for driver updates.

The last ones you need are Bluetooth and WIFI drivers. HP has offered those Pavilion G6-1300 laptops in many configurations so you could either download and run all the driver packages, or, as Mr. Tikkanen pointed out, use the Howtogeek website instructions to check the missing device hardware IDs and either google for them or use the PCI ID repository to identify the manufacturer and select the correct one from these:

Bluetooth drivers:

Atheros: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp55501-56000/sp55714.exe

Ralink: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp55001-55500/sp55063.exe

Broadcom: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp55001-55500/sp55079.exe

Wifi drivers:

Ralink: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp57501-58000/sp57538.exe (in case the earlier link didn't work for you)

Realtek: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp55001-55500/sp55342.exe

Atheros: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp54501-55000/sp54972.exe

Broadcom: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp53501-54000/sp53663.exe

Finally, here's the link to the last BIOS update (F.6A / June 2013) the laptop received. If your computer already has this version, you can disregard it. https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp62001-62500/sp62234.exe

The HP download page also contains other software and extra fluff - none of them needed.

Guys,

You are being extremely helpful and patient with me. Thank you.

I am entering a busy period so it might be a couple of days before I get back to you on your latest info. I am not losing interest - I think we are almost there!

Thank you, guys.

I did what Mr Tikkanen suggested in his last email and Chrome has downloaded.

Therefore, networking works over wired connection but apparently not WIFI

Under Device Manager > Network Controller device type is "Other devices", Manufacturer "Unknown"! Whereto now?

With continuing gratitude,

peter
