Forgot to mention, in the Power Plan I also set Process power management -> System cooling policy -> Plugged in to Passive (slow the processor before increasing fan speed).

It is also worth getting CPU utilization down to prevent the fan from coming on.

I have also disabled HP Sure Run in the BIOS (you need to do this first) and uninstalled the mind-boggling array of pre-installed HP bloatware, most of which pre-dates Windows 10 and does nothing much except for waste CPU cycles.  Sure Run coupled with the security manager seemed to be the biggest culprit for CPU use and for most people these are security overkill imho given Windows 10 Pro already has bitlocker and defender out of the box.

If you're a moderately experienced user you don't need anything HP put on these machines except for HP Hotkey Support, HP Universal Camera Driver and HP USB Audio.  Get rid of the rest in Add or Remove Programs.

I have PyCharm IDE running in WSL Ubuntu over X server and several browser tabs open and I'm at ~4-10% CPU now so that with the other tweaks = no fan 🙂

I did this ang ot the fan to slow down for some times when the computer was not loaded with work.

Now it is always on, an the fan high pitch noise is killing me.

HP fix this now!

I also tried the suggested solution, cleaned the bloatware, updated to the latest drivers and bios and still no success...after the fans start running they run all day at full speed no matter if i close all the programs and leave it idle. Temperatures are in the 40-50C area and the air blown out is cold so clearly the firmware doens't work correctly.

This is unacceptable, HP PLEASE FIX THIS ASAP !!!

PS: did anyone tried to run Linux instead of Windows ? Are the results the same ?

Had a clean win install when I got my Elitebook. Al lthe time normal, quiet fan operation. Then some weeks ago I recognized the fan going wild even under extreme low performance demand ... after starting it went all time max fan  The fan runs through without any stop and blows out cold air all the time ... the noise made me go nuts and I got mad searching for the problem and couldn't find any issue. Then I tried to isolate it and I realised that the fan kicks faster in when I was using an external monitor via HDMI. So I checked the driver for both graphiccards and saw, that the AMD driver was way too old. After installing the newest driver today ( see  https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics/radeon-500-series/radeon-rx-500-series/radeon-rx-540 ) the problem never shows up again ... finally holy silence! :generic: ! Maybe it helps you too?!

Same thing here, brand new HP Elitebook 840 G5 and the fan is going crazy at full speed...

BIOS has been updated this morning, no changes.

I'll try the Graphic driver update as suggested by Dexterian and will tell you if it worked.

Updating the AMD drivers didn't help, i tried disabling the amd gpu from bios and device manager also didn't help.

What is even wiereder is once the fan starts ramping up no matter what you do (closing the programs, lock windows and walk away) the fans still blow full speed, even after an hour away from the computer.

There's one particularity tho, if i'm running on battery the fan starts to blow full speed after a while (~ 20-30 minutes)...not quite imediately (~ 5-10 minutes) like on AC power.

In the last few days HP released a new BIOS firmware (01.03.00 Rev A). I had the same problems with the noisy fan as described in this post. After installing this latest firmware the problem is solved.

As you can see in the  the description, they seem to have addressed this failure:

"- Update thermal algorithm to improve fan still running high with very low (1-2%) CPU utilization."

Hi, did the BIOS update help you to solve the fan issue?

I am looking to buy this laptop but I don't want to have a noisy fan.

Please let me know
