HP ENVY x360 15m-dr1012dx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I bought this brand new HP ENVY x360 15m-dr1012dx in November 2019, and everything worked perfectly until 2 days ago, when its cooling fan suddenly began to surge at full power for about a second, stop for a second, then repeat regardless of the laptop's temperature (audio recording of this). This has never happened before, and now it always happens for as long as the laptop is powered on, again, regardless of the computer's temperature.  Because of this problem heat doesn't appear to dissipate at all, as the fan alternates between full power and no power every second; no air comes out of the vents.

This is a serious issue that may render my laptop unusable. I'm trying to determine if this problem is caused by a software or a hardware issue, to no avail. I've tried everything from system updates and reinstalling the BIOS to dusting both vents, also to no avail. HP Support Assistant, a system test, the guides on the HP website, and even talking to a customer service agent did not help at all. Is it likely that this is an issue with the heat sink itself, which would need to be replaced? It's similar to this and this problem, neither of which have been resolved. It does seem like this is a somewhat common issue in this line of ENVY x360 laptops.

@Plank20 I heard the audio clip you've shared and it sounds like a bee is stuck inside the device trying to sting its way out of it, we both know that's not possible, so let's work on resolving the fan noise and the heating issue too, also, i am aware some of the below suggestions have been attempted, however, these steps done in the sequence mentioned have shown to have resolved issues in many scenarios, so I'd suggest you give it a shot:

Click here to see this video in full screen on YouTube to reduce Heat Inside the Laptop to Prevent Overheating, alternatively, you can Click here for step by step instructions.

Also, to resolve issues such as Fan is Noisy and Spins Constantly:

  • Updating your Notebook computer BIOS
  • Keeping notebook air vents clear and clean
  • Increasing the efficiency of the notebook to reduce heat
  • Using Windows Task Manager to identify corrupt processes
  • Selecting power save settings to shut off your computer when it is not in use

FYI, I have this same computer, and had the same issue, except after the squeal the fan failed and the computer was blocked by the BIOS from booting up.  Sent it in underwarranty and they replaced the fan and the heat sink.  Service was relatively fast given the situation we all find ourselves in.  Hope you get yours fixed.
