HP Pavilion 15-bc500nv
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I had a couple questions regarding my laptop's warranty.

I was told by an HP support employee in the forums that I can open up the display bezel and remove/reattach the ribbon cable (or even replace the entire thing) without voiding the warranty. My doing that to the ribbon cable seemed to fix the issue I had been having but after a while (while not even touching anywhere on my laptop) the screen died and went white only slightly responding to what should be on it(eg BIOS was light gray while the Windows log-in screen was slightly dimmer).

Thinking that my warranty would already be voided (so might as well) I decided to reopen the display housing and try to detach both the ribbon cable that is accessible from the back *and* the internal ribbon cable under the black shielding tape at the bottom (keep in mind my screen was already very dead at this point without it being my fault). After disconnecting them I reattached them and screwed it back in place to see if it was fixed but it wasn't.

I posted that as a reply to that message board and I got told that it is a hardware failure and to contact support (I can only do it by phone where I live and the Phone Rep couldn't tell me a price because he didn't have a price sheet handy).

Is my warranty voided for that even though my display had problems? (and I was also told by an HP rep that I can in fact open up the display and remove/reattach it)

I did take all the necessary precautions of grounding, only using plastic tools etc.

If it (for some reason) IS voided how much would a repair from a service center cost for my laptop model? (I should add here that the rest of the laptop works perfectly if I connect it to an external monitor so nothing internal is really damaged)

Also, I don't know if it makes a difference in price but my display doesn't have damage in the front and hasn't been physically damaged so is it possible to just replace the chip at the bottom where I also feel extra heat coming off after running it only for a minute or maybe even replace the entire controller chip for less of a cost?

Thanks in advance

@Sveech1 Greetings from the HP Community!

If you wish to replace the part on your own, here's what you need to know:

you may either get the part number on the service guide (replacement procedure explained) or order the replacement parts on the HP Parts Store, use the HP Parts Surfer to find the part number and If you've already looked for it and couldn't find it on the HP Parts Store, you may want to get it locally at the online store such as Amazon or eBay, etc...as the part numbers are universal.

Alternatively, if you've not had any accidents with the device while opening it, I suggest you talk to HP support and discuss your options, follow the below steps to get started:

1) Click on this link - http://www.hp.com/contacthp/

2) Click on Sign-in or select the product using the below step:

3) Enter the serial of your device.

4) Select the country from the drop-down.

5) Click on "Show Options".

Fill the web-form, to populate a case number and phone number for yourself!

Also, if you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty, if yes? please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from,

here's how private messages work: Click here for details.

If you wish to thank me for my efforts, you could click on "Accept as solution" on my post as the solution should help others too.

Hello @Riddle_Decipher,

The service guide you linked is for a different laptop line and model. Is the procedure the same or was it just a mistake?

Regarding pricing I was mostly asking about the service center repair prices because I dont know for a fact if my warranty is (wrongfully) voided or not. Date-wise it still has 4-5 months of warranty on it remaining and, in case it is voided, I would be asked to pay for the repair so I want to know how much it could potentially cost before the fact.

Regarding shopping for the display on my own I haven't seen any stores, online or not, carry the part and as far as the HP Parts Surfer is concerned my computer does not even exist since when hitting Hierarchy all the options I get are: HP Pavilion Gaming 15-ak000 (Generic and touch), ak100 (Generic and touch), cx0000, dk0000, ec0000.(Quick search of the product number, serial number, or model only yields an error)

Thank you for posting back.

After reading your post, I did go through the Product specifications of your product and found that you have 39.6 cm (15.6") diagonal FHD SVA anti-glare WLED-backlit (1920 x 1080) installed on the PC. Here are the Maintenance and Service Guide for HP Pavilion 15-bc500nv.

As we have limited support boundaries in the support community as of now I would request you to reach out to our Support and our Support Engineers should be able to check the available service options in order to check repair cost.

Hello,

I read the Maintenance and Service guide and I only have 2 questions:

1) Is there a way to know if my laptop has the SVA panel you mentioned or the UWVA? What's the difference and are they compatible/interchangeable?

2) I have sent emails to local Part Suppliers to check if they have the 798933-015 display you mentioned. In case they don't (It doesn't exist on PartStore either in my Country). In case they don't have the part what are some compatible displays I can use instead? Or better yet, what are the specs I need to look out for that will mean a display is compatible with my laptop model?

Thanks again
