I had the same problem with a 11 inch pavilion purchased in 2012.  The keyboard became mushy, lock up and require a reboot.  I finally had to return it for a new keyboard.  In 2013 purchased a pavilion 17z 100.  I only use a mouse and once in awhile the key board becomes mushy, and certain letters do not respond nor the space bar....I think this is an inherent problem.  Why HP had not corrected this by 2013 is a mystery.
