Hello Top Student,

One other thing you may want to do, actually two things.

1. Just cleaning the fan the way you suggest may not get all th vent holes cleared out. It is better to take the lap top apart remove the motherboard and remove the fan along with the heat sinks. Next you will find 4 screws on the top side of the fan, remove them. This will seperate the fan from it's housing, now look at the vents from the inside, you may notice a lot of lint stuck squished agains the fan cover. Take a small brush or caned air to clean out. Then take a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol and clean each fan blade. this will take care of the fan problem.

2. I have noticed on most of these laptops that the heatsink compound is lacking to say the leaset. Clean the compound off of the processor and heat sinks. Clean with rubbing alcohol then apply a liberal amount of thermal past and re attach.

I did these two things and have not had any more problems with overheating. Below are two videos. The first will show you how to take apart your laptop. The second will show you how to remove the fan/heatsinks and apply the new thermal comound.

Hope this helps......

Good Luck.

I have tried that no luck the bloody thing still runs hotter than a dog on heat. held a comp at woork to see who could hold their hand on the top of the top right hand corner the longest the record is 15 seconds.  I have stripped it cleaned it  replaced the thermal paste and still no difference. even changed the hd to ssd

Hi everyone,

Thank you for your queries. I wil do my best to help.

I regret you are having this difficulty.

I grasp that you are experiencing an overheating and auto shutdown issue. Here is a link to Troubleshooting an Overheating and Auto Shutdown Issue.

If you unit requires a bios update, I suggest contacting HP support as it does have the potential to cause damage.

Updating the BIOS.

"Unfortunately, none of that helps with the design flaw in the hinge that causes the problem in the first place !!"

I agree and being told to repeat the same "troubleshooting" steps you have already done under the assumption the it is the BIOS or airways are clogged is blanket denial and time wasting. HP should issue a recall and repair the units, free of charge.

I am a technology consultant. My laptops are my entire life and I thought this laptop would be a good consumer grade laptop for more personal use. After using this I can't recommend an HP laptop. Not until I see a signifigant change in form or follow through with actually recalling and fixing the issue. After trying every solution I know, researching online and trying the troubleshooting steps suggested I am just dessapointed. I knew the whole time that my bios was fine and airways wer clean and  even with the cooling trays I've had to use with it over the last year, this laptop gets incredibly hot.

I agree I also sell and repair laptops for a living you are absoluty correct there is a terible design flaw cause by the tension on the hing and the ingredibly small piece if plastic that supports the screw wether or not that is enough to cause the heating  problem I personally doubt it . But I will admit I am at a loss to know excatly what it is Mine is pristine inside I have hade the top of on numerous occasions and even run it "naked" and it still runs hot. My guess is that the fan and heat transfer unit it is attached to is of inferior quallity and not up to the task. as for thsoe users who have cleaned out their fans etc. well thats great for you but I think it still proves that the quality is not good enough because if the fan is running and the air vents are even only 50 % clear it shouldn't get that hot.

HP has totally avoided the basic fact that they screwed up......there was a design defect in the Pavilion dv7.

Their complete lack of responsibility in this issue is totally unacceptable.

After less than 100 hours, my unit is now in the garbage (mother board burned out !!!) and all that HP has to say is that's life!!!!

No support, no service, no quality.

I will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER buy an HP product again and will tell everyone I can the same thing.

Let's hope they go bankrupt and take their lousy attitude with them.

The worst part of this whole issue is that HP doesn't give a **bleep**......no quality, no service.

My dv7 is now in the garbage with a burned out mother board and HP just doesn't care.

I used to be an avid HP buyer (I was a corporate Purchasing Manager and bought many of their computers/printers).

But now, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER again any HP product. I hope they go bankrupt !!!!

Hi @supreMe83 I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post serial numbers and case details. If you are unfamiliar with how the Forum's private message capability works, this post has instructions.

Agreed. I was a dedicated HP customer for years. Then their product quality and support went straight down the drain. Now if I'm buying a premade PC I buy Asus. Or just build my own. I'm only even on this thread now to unsubscribe from back when I still had the same laptop as the OP and it overheated to the point of dying. NEVER AGAIN am I buying an HP product. I've even replaced them in regards to my home printers.

I keep reading complaints about this known heat problem with the HP dv series (I own the dv6 pavillion, 5 years now!) and since nothing short of a re-design and new notebook will fix it, I VERY stronlgy recommend:

Give it a blast with a compressed air gun or even can of conmpressed air from bunnings or Jaycar.

This will blast the dust and crap away from the exhaust fan giving you immediate coolness....and less noise!!

....it would also be wise to note that sitting in bed with the notebook on your blanket/doona would be a very foolish idea also.

Hope you enjoy the fruits of the somewhat simple quick fix. Time between blasts is directly related to how dusty your house or the environment you're working in is.

Cheers, Steve..

Sorry, but that's NOT a fix.

Mine had only 100 hours on it until the motherboard burned out and it never left my desk.

The gap left by the design defect - broken left hinge- caused the cooling air (!!!) to not circulate over the motherboard.

The service department would do NOTHING for me.

My dv7 is now in the garbage and I will NEVER, NEVER, NEVER buy another HP product as long as I live and will continue to tell all I can my story. So far, HP has lost at least 10 sales....maybe more.
