HP Spectre 13-v011dx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I've used this laptop for almost three years. For the few months it has been getting harder and harder to charge my laptop. I believe that at first the charging cable was faulty because it did have physical damage, and when I replaced it the laptop had no problem charging. Although, more recently I would have to change the position of the charging cable for the laptop to charge. Now it won't charge at all, except it seems to be able to charge most of the time after the battery has drained and it has rested for a little while. But as soon as I unplug and plug the charging cable, it stops charging again. I replaced the charging cable a second time but this didn't help so it is unlikely a problem with the charging cable. I have three USB-C charging ports and they all under perform in the same way. It has been difficult for me to understand what is exactly wrong with my laptop.

I have run a HP Hardware Diagnostics for the battery but no issues arose both when it was not charging and when it was charging (including diagnosis of AC adapter). I have heard that a power reset might help but I could not find directions for my model, and the standard option of holding the power button down for 15 seconds either when it is turned off or while it is still on does not do anything. I could not find instructions in any of the model's manuals either.

Support would be much appreciated.

@moledownunder if you don't have access to an alternate adapter, I suggest you talk to HP support and discuss your options:

follow the below steps to get started:

1) Click on this link - www.hp.com/contacthp/

2) Click on "Continue as guest".

3) Enter the serial of your device.

4) Select the country from the drop-down.

Fill the web-form, to populate a case number and phone number for yourself!

Also, if you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty, if yes? please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from,

@moledownunder Welcome to HP Forums Community!

I have a few steps listed below that should help you resolve this concern:

Unplug the charge and use the laptop until the battery drains to 15%.

Turn off the laptop and turn it back on after 30mins.

Reinstalled Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery under device manager:

  • 1) In the search box, type and open “Device Manager”.
  • 2) Expand “Batteries”.
  • 3) Right-click the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" that is listed there.
  • 4) Click on “Uninstall”.
  • 5) At the prompt put a check in the box to remove the current driver
  • 6) Shutdown the computer.
  • 7) Remove the battery for a minute and then put it back in (Instead, follow the steps complaint about your model: Click here)
  • 😎 When the computer comes back up it should automatically find the driver.
  • 9) Go to Device Manager.
  • 10) Expand Batteries.
  • 11) Right-click the "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery" that is listed there.
  • 12) Click "Search automatically for updated driver software"
  • Do the same thing with Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller.

Restart the computer and the issue should be fixed.

I hope that answers your query,

Hello, thank you for your response.

I have tried to follow your instructions exactly. I wasn't able to fix the issue, although I am unsure if I have completed every step correctly.

In particular, I am unsure if the power reset worked. According to the link you provided, I should hold the power button while the computer is off for 15 seconds (no instructions were provided for my specific model so I assumed that I should follow the standard solution). I tried this but nothing in particular seemed to happen. When I turned on the computer, no start-up options came up or anything like that. Also, according to the instructions, I should have plugged the AC adapter in when I start the computer after the reset, but of course I am unable to do that unless the computer is completed drained. I am not sure if really matters.

Also, I could not see "Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Embedded Controller" under batteries for the very last step. Not sure if that is significant.

Cheers

@moledownunder Those steps are for every HP computer ever made, both with removable battery and non-removable, that said, the steps are supposed to release the excessive static, if you've removed all connections and hold the button for 15 seconds as advised, you've done a good job, also, if you've not been able to find the ACPI-Complaint battery driver its most likely because the driver is missing, I suggest you update the Chipset drivers and the BIOS from the HP website.

Also, try with an alternate adapter and/or power cord (if available),

If that doesn't work, please leave the computer on charge for over 12hrs and check if that helps.

Good news. I got a replacement AC adapter from the official HP parts website and the laptop is charging with no issues as soon as I plugged it in. Costed a bit to replace but I'm happy that your solution worked. Thanks!
