  • Device: HP Victus 16

Purchase Location: India

Current Location: Ireland

The Problem

The device behaves as if the lid is constantly detected as closed, even when it is physically open:

  • The internal screen turns off or flickers.
  • The power button LED turns off or flickers.
  • The keyboard and trackpad become unresponsive.

This behavior has been observed in the BIOS, which rules out a purely software or OS-related cause.

All observations point to a hardware malfunction of the Hall Effect (lid) sensor or a closely related power management component. Given the heat exhaust placement on the Victus 16, this appears to be a thermal-induced failure of the sensor module.

Identical cases have been reported on the HP Victus 16 product line, suggesting a recurring manufacturing defect.

While the device was purchased in India, I am currently a student in Ireland.

I tried to contact the support team. As there is no physical service center in Ireland, the support team quoted me a 400 euro fix. I do not understand why they are quoting a motherboard fix rather than a heat senor fix. It is totally unacceptable, to replace a whole motherboard for a 50 euro sensor fix.

Also this is an hidden defect from the manufacturer.

Under the Sale of Goods and Supply of Services Act 1980 (Ireland) and the Consumer Protection Act 2019 (India), a product must be of merchantable quality and durable. A logic failure within 2 years on a performance machine indicates a latent defect present at the time of manufacture.

I would prefer to resolve this amicably, i am a student relying on this machine for my education entirely.

I feel at somepoint that a seller is legally liable for hidden defects that render a product unfit for its intended use, even after the standard warranty period has expired.

I request for:

A free diagnostic inspection, repair covered in full by HP, or compensation if repair is not reasonable.
