HP N107NA Convertible
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My HP N107NA convertible laptop/tablet was supplied with Windows 10 (64bit) ready installed. I have tried installing the latest Windows 10 update (NOT upgrade) but it tells me I need more space on drive C than is available. I have deleted every unecessary file I can think of but still not enough space. Now what?

Thank you for joining HP Forums.
I'll be glad to help you 🙂

As I understand you want to update the windows, however, it isn't working due to low disk space,

Don't worry as we should be able to work together and obtain more space on your drive:

  • Run the Disk Cleanup tool, and then at the bottom of the window that pops up, click on "Clean up system files". Check everything, hit OK, and let it run. You will free up several GB for sure.
  • Another thing to do is disable hibernate file. Run CMD as Administrator, and type the following:
  • powercfg hibernate off
  • Enjoy your extra space!

Didn't Work!

Before starting, free space on C drive was stated as 4.49GB of the 28.1GB usuable space on the 32GB SSD.

After doing the clean-up as instructed, stated space on C drive now 8.40GB. After turning Hibernate off, free space increased to 9.17GB.

I then tried the Windows 10 update and it got to around 44% before stopping and telling me I had insufficient space and to do a disc clean. I checked the C drive and free space was back down to 4.29GB. Back to square 1. I have no large data files on the C drive so what's taking up all the space. Seems as though Windows 10 fills the space with the downloaded files leaving it with insufficient space to install them. Catch 22?

How do we get out of this vicious circle?

Is a 32GB (=28GB) SSD man enough for Windows 10 I wonder.

Thank you for replying,

Did you try the steps mentioned in the link I had posted earlier?
I would also recommend deleting the windows.old files on disk cleanup that contain the windows update installation files which are no longer needed.

And for further assistance: Click here (though the header is different the additional steps will help).

Keep me posted,

Yes I did try the links but they are not relevant to my situation because my convertible laptop was supplied with W10 already installed so there were no Windows.old files to delete.

I tried installing the W10 update again. When it ran into the insufficient space message (at 41%) I noticed a dialog box offering the opportunity to nominate another drive. On the drop-down list I found Drive E: (which is the 1TB HDD residing in the keyboard half of my convertible). Having chosen this, the install went perfectly and I even ended up with more free space on my C: drive than when I started. The windows.old files are stored on the E: drive.

Quite "belated", but do you have about 12 GB of files in the 'C:\Windows\Installer' folder?

If so, then 12 GB (out of your 32 GB) is quite a large percentage.

If so, copy all those 'MSI' and 'MSP' files to an external USB memory-stick.

Then, open a "Run As Administrator" command-line window, switch to that folder, and use:

    ERASE   /F   *MSI

    ERASE   /F   *MSP

to free-up enough space for Windows Update to download all "new"  updates.
