Dear friends,
I have HP EliteBook 8440p 520M laptop.
Cpu is Intel Core i5 520M, Cores 2, Threads 4
Mother Board is Hewlett-Packard 172B.
Chipset Model is Havendale/Clarkdale Host Bridge
Total memory slots is 2
Currently I have 8GB ram (2 X 4GB DDR3)
I would like to increase the ram to 16GB (2 X 8GB DDR3).
Please kindly advice if it is possible.

Hi:
No, it isn't possible.
You need a second generation i-series processor and the Mobile Intel 6 series chipset to run 2 x 8 Gb of memory in an intel hardware based notebook.
Your notebook has a first generation i-series processor, and the Mobile intel QM57 chipset.
You can confirm this by reading the processor specs for your processor at the link below.
Note the maximum memory that is able to be addressed by the processor is 8 GB.

hi all,
I have the 8440p 540M with intel GPU. The machine runs a 6gb (4gb (PC3-10700 (667Mhz)+ 2gb (PC3-10700 (667Mhz) ) at present. I've tried a 8GB PC3L-12800 stick in there but the machine when booting win7 Pro doesnt see the 8+4 or 8+2 configuration and BSOD's and the Ubuntu with 8gb on its own.
However i also run a dual boot OS on this machine, Ubuntu 14.04 runs up fine and shows 12Gb (8gb and original 4GB) on system info so its a limitation of the OS. upgrading to Win8 and above may fix that.
