OMEN 17.3 inch Gaming Laptop PC 17-ck2000 (70X00AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I’ve been using this laptop for about a year. Recently, I’ve been experiencing an issue where the fans suddenly stop working on their own. Sometimes they start working again after 15–30 seconds, but other times they don’t restart at all, and I’m forced to reboot the device.

To troubleshoot, I uninstalled the HP Omen software, then reinstalled it, updated the BIOS and the HP Omen software itself, and also installed the HP Omen SDK. However, the issue still occurs. Interestingly, if I end all Omen-related tasks from the Task Manager, the problem seems to go away.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi @gervais5

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

That’s definitely frustrating, especially for a gaming laptop where cooling is crucial. Since the issue seems tied to Omen-related processes.

It sounds like the Omen Gaming Hub software might be interfering with fan control, especially since ending its tasks temporarily resolves the issue. Here are some additional steps to try:

Reset Omen Gaming Hub Settings

  • Open Omen Gaming Hub and go to Performance Control or Fan Control.
  • Set the fan mode to Automatic or Default instead of manual adjustments.

Disable Omen Gaming Hub on Startup

  • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • Go to the Startup tab and disable Omen Gaming Hub from launching automatically.
  • Restart your laptop and check if the issue persists.

Reinstall Chipset & Thermal Drivers

  • Open Device Manager (Press Win + X, then select Device Manager).
  • Expand System Devices and Thermal Framework.
  • Right-click each driver and select Update driver.
  • If updating doesn’t work, uninstall and reinstall them from HP’s support page.

Check BIOS Fan Settings

  • Restart your laptop and press F10 to enter BIOS.
  • Look for Thermal or Fan Management settings and ensure they are set to default or optimal performance.

Monitor Laptop Temperatures

  • Install HWMonitor or use Omen Gaming Hub to check if the fans stop due to incorrect temperature readings.
  • If temperatures are normal but fans stop, it could be a sensor issue.

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Restart your laptop and press F2 repeatedly to enter HP Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Run a full system test, especially for thermal components.

I've tried all of them and the things below so nothing changed.

IThe fans behave erratically under both load and idle conditions. When the CPU or GPU temperature increases, the fans sometimes completely stop spinning and then suddenly spin up again. This cycle repeats frequently and inconsistently. The same behavior sometimes occurs even when the system is completely idle, with CPU temps around 45–50°C.

In some cases, after letting the system cool down to 55–60°C, the fans do not start spinning at all for almost an hour. If I shut down the system during this state, I receive a 90B fan error. However, if the fans spin at least once before shutting down, no error occurs.

What I’ve Tried So Far:

Removed and reinstalled the battery.

I did clean the fans.

Fully uninstalled Omen Gaming Hub.

Disabled all HP Omen services via Task Manager and Services.msc.

Tried third-party fan monitoring and control tools (including OGH, OmenMon, and another software) – all exhibit the same issue.

Updated BIOS to the latest version.

Verified BIOS setting “Fan Always On” is enabled.

Tested PSU using a multimeter – confirmed not faulty.

Conducted EC reset – no improvement.

Thanks for all your efforts and patience!!

It sounds like you've been incredibly thorough in troubleshooting this issue, and the fact that the 90B fan error appears when the system cools down suggests a deeper hardware or firmware-related problem.

Here are a few additional steps that might help:

Advanced Troubleshooting for HP Omen Fan Issues

Check for Fan Sensor Malfunctions

  • Since the fans stop spinning at random intervals, it’s possible the thermal sensors are misreading temperatures.
  • Try running HWMonitor or SpeedFan to check if the temperature readings fluctuate abnormally.

Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn off the laptop and disconnect the battery and power adapter.
  • Hold the power button for 30 seconds to drain residual power.
  • Reconnect the battery and power adapter, then restart the laptop.

Inspect the Fan Connector & Wiring

  • If comfortable, open the laptop and check the fan connectors for loose connections.
  • Some users have reported that reseating the fan cables resolved erratic behavior.

Reapply Thermal Paste

  • If the thermal paste has dried out, the CPU/GPU may not be cooling efficiently.
  • Consider reapplying high-quality thermal paste to improve heat dissipation.

Try a BIOS Downgrade (If Possible)

  • Some BIOS updates introduce fan control issues.
  • If your laptop allows BIOS rollback, try reverting to an earlier version.

Replace the Cooling Fan (If Necessary)

  • If the fan motor is failing, it may intermittently stop working.
  • Consider replacing the fan with an OEM HP replacement.

Let me know if any of these steps help! You deserve a laptop that runs smoothly without overheating issues.

As a user, I hate dealing with such things and I will send the device to warranty. I don't know how I will find time among all my work and projects, but I regret buying HP and even recommending it to my friends.

I hear your frustration—it’s exhausting dealing with hardware issues, especially when time is already stretched thin. Since you’re planning to send the laptop in for warranty service, here are a few things that might help streamline the process:

  1. Check HP’s Warranty Guidelines – HP’s official support page outlines warranty coverage and service options.
  2. Describe the Issue Clearly – When contacting HP, mention that the fans stop randomly and only restart after a reboot. If possible, include any troubleshooting steps you’ve already tried.

I know this situation is frustrating, and I hope HP resolves it quickly for you. If you need help navigating their support system, I’m happy to assist!
