How would I test it without the battery?

@12359

WB2001 is simply asking you to remove the battery, plug the laptop into the power cord and turn the laptop on.

Does Windows work OK with only the power cord???

IF Yes, your battery is BAD.

So is windows not supposed to work with only the power cord?

HP Recommended

How do I know if the battery is good? What do you mean when you say windows is not supposed to work?

HP Recommended

You are completely misunderstanding everything we have mentioned to you.

Yes the laptop is capable of running without the battery if only the power cord is plugged in.

Our instructions are simple to follow...

  1. Remove the battery and plug the power cord into the laptop.
  2. Does the laptop work OK while on Power Cord ONLY??? If the laptop can run with only the power cord but not with the battery, then the battery is bad and needs replaced. Its as simple as that!

If you cannot follow the instructions, there is nothing else we can do for you here.

You have completely misunderstood what my problem is. If you actually read it carefully, then you would have seen my laptop can run with the battery and without the power cord. Both of you have misread what my original post is about. My laptop shuts down unexpectedly when it is not plugged in (for example it started to shut down at 30%, then 50% and now recently  79%.

If you simply cannot read carefully, then there is nothing you can do for me.

In future, I suggest you carefully read people's problems.

Thank you for trying.

Fair enough and apologies, we do have to go thru fast as we are trying to do several things in a short amount of time.

"So is windows not supposed to work with only the power cord?" We never said that and that is what was throwing me off.

But your battery can be bad, no matter what the battery test shows.

So If you will, run the PC with the power cord only for a while (no battery) just to confirm the laptop will not randomly shut off. If it does not, I am confident your battery is at its end of life. Its 3 years old and its normal for these batteries to reach their end of life about that time.

Apology accepted,

"So is windows not supposed to work with only the power cord?" We never said that and that is what was throwing me off.

I only said this because I was confused and didn't know you misunderstood my issue.

run the PC with the power cord only for a while (no battery) just to confirm the laptop will not randomly shut off.

If it does randomly shut off, what does this mean? (I haven't tried it yet but I will let you know what happens.)

Also if my battery is at the end of its life, could you please help with replacing it.

Thanks.

"If it does randomly shut off, what does this mean?"

So, your laptop was shutting down at various points of battery charge which was random.

If your laptop continues to shut down randomly (meaning at any time with no rhyme or reason) while only using only the power cord, there is a different issue at hand.

But if it does not shut off while the laptop is on power cord, it points to the battery.

Your battery is a  4-cell, 41-Whr, 2.8-Ah Li-ion battery  part number:  919701-850

HP might still sell them in your country. Here is the link to the HP parts line. Choose your country and see if its actually available.

If not, you will have to search the web for a 3rd party seller.
