Thank you for the insight. It may be a while before I move on this but will report back!

What in particular about the HD replacement was a pain? Looking at the manual, it doesn't look that painstaking...could be because I've replaced smaller parts on apple devices.

There's two types of amateur laptop technicians in the wolrd: those have ruined their laptop trying to upgrade something and those who will.

Most business-class lappies have readily - accessible HDDs for privacy/resale /lease features that literally require removing a few screws to open a port and then unplugging and replugging the reploacement.

The 15-F222WM with its touch display and unbelievably low pricepoint is not designed with business users in mind. There's a reason that HP (and several posters here)  caution you that the HDD is not a user - serviceable part.

For simple, safe reliable storage expansion I strongly recommend casual users to simply buy an SD card and pop it in the slot.

I bought a class 10 128GB card for my daughter's 15-F222WM to store her music and videos  for under $30 and can easily upgrade it when 256 prices come down.

I completely understand and appreciate the words of caution. The primary reason I'm considering the HD switch to Solid State is for (hopefully) a performance increase and not for a storage increase.

I'll start with doubling the memory to see how that feels.

I had considered that also at one point, but accessing through the kb (and removing a lot of components) didn't seem worth it considering it does only rock a Pentium and your performance payoff will only go so far. I only mention that because my wife has an HP Envy 360 with an i5 with which I can compare it to and the performance difference of the Pentiun is pretty stark.

Of course, the Envy costs more than twice as much and the killer feature on the F222 is its touch display for less than $300 which still boggles my mind.

I did, however, swap out the WLAN card for one with BT. That was a necessity because I didn't want to tie up a USB port permanently with a dongle.

BTW, those OEM HP Ralink 690020-001 cards can be had on the 'Bay for as little as $6 from China if you don't mind waiting a little bit and they work great.

I'd be very interested to hear how your performance feels if you ever do the SSD swap.

Cheers

The manual states  the memory id non-customer accessable,  which is wrong, nor does it state anywhere that this modle CAN work with a 8 GB memory stick as psoted by another user, Also or do I see that information in any of your posts either. And when I called HP tech support and part sales department, both told me the max was 4 GB and they also told me this laptop has a fan which is DOES NOT, Therefore it seems HP does not even know there own products.

No not my loss my gain, If I knew 3 months ago what I know now, I never would have gotten this laptop. It seems HP rates pretty low on several reports and articles I have read over the last several months.

Note: You can also consider changing the WLAN module to one with bluetooth capability. I did that in order to connect my bluetooth mouse. It works. It is in the same compartment as the memory module. Easily accessible.

Thanks for your info. I found the WLAN model and it is easily accessible as you said, but I only found one WLAN antenna wire that connects to the module.

In the manual (pg.42) it shows two (presumablythe second one is the BT antenna/wire?) and it did not enable BT with just the one wire connected, only WiFi.

Is the second one covered up or folded up hidden somewhere or maybe the F222-wm does not have a BT antenna wire to handle these WiFi/BT modules?

Any help would be great.

Yes, there is only 1 antenna. Just plug the combo adapter in and connect the antenna. Boot up the laptop and it will auto-detect the BT and install the drivers within a minute.

Yeah, didn't work. The WiFi worked fine, but no BT drivers installed or popped up. I know the driver are there because it works with a BT dongle - just plug and play, but nothing with the 690020-001 card. Maybe I gota dud?

Can you try and remove the existing BT drivers belonging to your dongle, reboot and let Windows detect the hardware changes? I did not have any other BT dongle drivers prior to swapping the card.
