HP 255 G10
Microsoft Windows 11

As the topic suggests, this a continuation of https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Microphone-on-HP-255-G10/td-p/... because the problem persists even to this day.

Basically the gpu / chipset drivers for this notebook are in some sort of limbo. If you install 32.0.11020.16 Rev.E (sp154692) you will have quite a lot of devices still missing its drivers and no microphone, whereas if you install 31.0.21910.4002 Rev.B (sp152268) there will be no unknown devices but you will have no microphone.

After some digging i've found out that my notebook came with gpu / chipset driver version 31.0.21914.8004 from factory which you cannot find for this exact notebook at all. Digging some more i've found that HP 14-dk1xxx / 255 G9 and some other models use the same version of this driver at some point and you can download it, for example sp154939 or sp155090.

But there's a caveat with these drivers, while it will install no problem and your microphone will become available, gpu drivers will not install. So for now the only solution i've been able to come up is to download gpu / chipset drivers from some other model (in my case sp155090), install them normally then manually install gpu drivers from sp154692 or you can install sp155090 and then connect to the internet, windows update will download 31.0.21910.4002 regardless.

HP, PLEASE FIX YOUR DRIVERS....I mean i can understand some bugs here and there, but this is just bonkers.

Alright, some addendum and a fix.

After many reinstalls, diffrent drivers and other experiments i've finally found what was causing the mic not appearing in the device manager.

Here's the actual fix, i'll explain why further down the line: download drivers sp152268 / 31.0.21910.4002 Rev.B 903.7 MB May 1, 2024 from the hp 255 g10 page and sp155090 from anywhere you want, we will be needing only one folder from this driver pack. Install sp152268 as normal, while installing unzip (install 7zip or w/e) sp155090 and wait till the the drivers from the sp152268 finish installing, should take a minute or two. After that, open up device manager and navigate to system devices->AMD Audio CoProcessor, double click and press update driver, navigate to sp155090\Driver\dchu_09GFX_ACPBus . After that your driver version should be bumped up to 6.0.0.92 and your Audio inputs and outputs should have Microphone array present.

Now as to how i've figured this out. Basically this thread on AMD forums https://community.amd.com/t5/pc-drivers-software/23-11-1-adrenalin-my-microphone-amd-array-is-gone-a...

gave me the biggest clue as to where i should look, specifically CodySlay post gave me the exact solution. For some bizzare reason the driver of AMD Audio CoProcessor supplied with sp152268 doesnt activate microphone array but sp155090 does. Better yet, if you download sp1546692 / 32.0.11020.16 Rev.E 964.5 MB Sep 4, 2024, the driver is listed as 6.0.0.94 which is newer, but its not compatible with the system its listed for.

Honestly i'm kind of baffled as to how did this happen. Or are we finally seeing results of diversity hires?
