HP Pavilion - 15-ck004no

My HP Pavilion 15-ck004no cannot detect NVMe SSD i am trying to install.

The manual clams NVMe support, at least upp to 512GB.

Some people has conclude it doesn't support NVME , just SATA m.2 ssd.

Has somebody had any success?

On Intel gen11 there is a way to add storage drivers on the ne w disk first, but mine is gen 8.

Should I just give up?

I have tried a fresh installation of windows from a USB stick, like HP suggest for Intel gen 11 here:
     https://support.hp.com/hk-en/document/ish_4859717-4859823-16

It doesn't recognise the NVMe drive.

I had the latest storage driver put to the USB stick like instructed in the link.

I can navigate to the driver, but the driver is just SATA driver, no Intel RST VMD  driver like in the link.

I tried the SATA driver, but not surprisingly the Widows installer still didn´t find the NVMe disc.

I am not an expert, but my conclusion is then very simple, probably there isn't any NVME support in this laptop.

The only thing I didn't test is a smaller 512 GB NVMe wi¨hich specifly is supporteted in the manual,

I am surprised HP state NVMe support, if there is not.

Probably Intel RST VMD drivers are not supposed to be use on non-gen11 intel machines, at least that's my guess

Hi:

This discussion indicates the forum member installed a 256 GB Samsung PM961 and it didn't work.

Same issue as you are having.

On the next to the last post, the person indicated that he then installed a Samsung 960 NVMe SSD and it worked.

Then the last person who posted indicated the Samsung 960 NVMe SSD didn't work.

Solved: Hp Pavilion 15 SSD M.2 Upgrade - HP Support Community - 6528549

Unfortunately, I don't know what to tell you.

If you have the latest BIOS update installed, it may not be worth experimenting with different NVMe SSD's

I don't see how the Samsung 960 can work in one 15-ck and not in the other.  Makes no sense.

Thanks Paul,

No luck so far but it at least feel a bit better to see I am not alone of this irritating problem.
The disk I am trying to install is a Seagate FireCuda510 2TB.

You're very welcome.

I think it going to be one of those unsolvable mysteries.

Maybe you can pick up a used but tested and working Samsung 960 on eBay.

You won't find a 2 TB drive though.

Maybe I will buy a sata m.2 disk, like :
 - WD Blue SSD SA510 M.2 1TB

 - Verbatim Vi560 S3 SSD, intern SSD-enhet med 1 TB

 - WD Red 2 TB NAS SA500 SSD M.2 SATA

 - Intenso Top Performance SSD 1 TB M.2 SATA III (very cheap but maybe poor quality???)

HP Recommended

Of the 3 you listed, I recommend the WD Blue SA510.

Could it be worth to try later Intel drivers?
 - HP Intel RST latest driver for my model: 16.8.3.1003 Rev.J  23 aug 2019

 - Driver hub:

Intel 6th Generation Core Processor Family Platform I/O SATA AHCI Controller
      Driver type: IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
      Vendor: Intel Corporation
      Version: 16.8.5.1014 (13 Dec 2022)

Or should I try to update the firmware for the disk?
