Pavilion dv6700 won't start

If you have the ability to replace the mobo, then why not try one of the reflow options.  It cost me $12us (thermal paste), and about eight hours of work.  It has only been 8 days, but my computer is running perfectly.

I do not know how good the replacement motherboards are, but I assume they would be of similar quality to the originals.  From what I understand, motherboards on ebay (buyer beware) go for $85 to $150.  Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in about their quality.

I can tell you this... There are a lot of problems with the DV series of computers that HP has produced. Just do as I have, and do the email tech support, I have 2 that I am working on right now... A DV6000  (DV6208NR), and a Pesario C700 (C714NR). Both of which are having the same issues... Their problems are with the cooling fans, heat sinks, and other parts that are dieing off... Which is from the heat that is produced inside the laptops themselves. I will WARN YOU from a non HP tech view of this... If you continue to run the laptops, there will be more damage to the internal components. Get a hold of HP tech support. I have and I am getting ready to get the box for FREE Repair sent to me... They have a lot of known issues, along with the batteries, as stated above the cooling issues are another. This is what happens when you get crap from over seas. I have been working on computers for a long time, and this is a know issue with the HP series, look for it on the internet, google your p/n and you will find forums on this. As I said before, email tech support, the will tell you to do BIOS update, and then tell you to send it in... Take nothing less than the FREE REPAIR as listed under their limited warranty repairs listed. Look and see if the P/N is listed, and I am sure you will find your specific laptop on there, and it is FREE for repair.. In and out... 7-9 business days. Take advantage of it instead of searching for a replacement, or getting another laptop...

Everyone with this HP power problem should all file complaints with the U.S. Gov Office of Consumer Affairs. If they get enough complaints they may get involved and make HP honor the expired warrenties. That is what I intend to do. It has worked for me in the past when I complained about ripoffs with magazine subscription outfits.

Just curious, but what is there to honor with an expired warranty?

I've just been told that the hard drive on my daughter's  HP Pavillion DV6700 will have to be replaced at a cost of $200.00 and it will cost me almost $800.00 to recover the data. (She didn't do backups, so that is our fault!)

It's not even 18 months old, and has been treated gently.  I've had an HP desktop for over 10 years with no issues, so didn't think we needed to shell out $300 for extended warranty.

A co-worker advised me to call HP and see if there was a recall on this as she had a similar issue with a laptop not even two years old, and it was covered under the recall.  I'm waiting for a reply from HP.

I recently purchased a Dell Netbook which is performing wonderfully,   so depending on the answer we get, we may be switching.

Possibly the infamous Nvidia graphics failure due to bad solder.Reflowing graphic chip has become common. There are hundreds of videos on You Tube showing different procedures...if you are ,or know someone, good at this sort of thing.

I had the same problem on a client laptop dv6700, lights came on for a second, could hear the fan start to come on then it would go off then do the same thing after few seconds later. I tried hard reset, different power adapter, reseated the RAM none of that worked. I held down the ESC key and pushed the power button at the same time and the lights stayed on laptop slowly came on and gave some error messages about RUNDL but now it is working ok. I haven't shut it off yet, backing up pictures and documents before taking the chance but at least I am able to get them.

I realize it has been a few months since your post but I just had the problem and thought this could help.

At the risk of beating a dead horse I'm looking for some information about my hp pavillion dv6886se (or something like that) it is part of the 6700 series so it isn't covered by the extended service warranty, which apparently isn't valid now anyways. I've been having some issues with it for awhile but the have been occuring more and more frequently. The laptop will just shut down for no apparent reason while usually while I'm watching a video or movie. Initially I thought it was an overheating issue as the laptop does get quite hot, so I bought an external cooling system to help with that and updated the BIOS. However, the laptop still has been randomly shutting off. It will shut off and then it won't turn on again immediately, but if I wait a few minutes it will boot up with no issues (asks me if I want to run in safe mode). It shut off today when the laptop was pretty much stone cold so I don't necessarily believe it is overheating anymore. 

This being said I've read a lot of the threads about the defects of the dv6000 series (of which my laptop is one) and I'm not having a lot of those issues just the random shutting off. Is this the motherboard issue, if so why does it restart after leaving it for a couple of minutes.  I will say that one of the first times it shut down I wasn't able to start windows in normal mode, but luckily I was able to make a backup in safe mode and then did a total wipe and reinstall of everything -- lost a couple of programs but no files. I haven't had it do that since and that was probably about a year ago, but I still make sure to back up files pretty routinely especially when it starts acting up. Anyways just wondering if anyone has any ideas as to why my laptop is acting up and randomly shutting off -- maybe something other than the motherboard?

Ditto here.  When I press the power button, all the LED's light up for a second, and then back off.  I am told by a local computer shop that the motherboard is the culprit.  With such a common issue, I fully expect some kind of free solution from HP.
