You're very welcome, @ub6424

On notebooks with the Intel 1st Gen core processors, you have to refer to the service manual to see if different motherboards are required.

For one thing, all Intel 1st gen core processors require a discrete graphics adapter.

They do not work with the onboard Intel graphics.

Now, it is possible that if this 8540W has a discrete graphics adapter, the quad core processor should work.

See this discussion where someone did just that, claims that it worked with the dual core motherboard.

The notebook does have the discrete Nvidia graphics card.

The discrete graphics adapter requirement also pertains to desktop PC's when someone wants to upgrade to a 1st gen quad core processor.

The PC must have a discrete graphics adapter installed for the quad core processor to work.

The difference is it is very easy to install a graphics card in a desktop PC.

The mobile workstations such as the 8540w also can have MXM graphics cards installed.

Hi, @SenoxSenox, @ub6424

I want to apologize.  It was I that is incorrect.

After all these years, I have finally figured out why separate motherboards are listed for the dual and quad core processors.

Since that person indicated that the quad core processor worked in a dual core motherboard (as long as it has one of the listed discrete MXM graphics adapters for the model series), it isn't because the quad core processor won't work, it is because the dual core motherboards only have two memory slots, and the quad core processor motherboards have four memory slots.

That is because the quad core processors can support twice the memory as the dual core processors can, so two additional memory slots were included in the models that came with the quad core processors.

So, you should be fine upgrading to any of the Quad core processors listed in the manual as long as your notebook has one of the discrete graphics adapters.

What if I also try to upgrade the GPU and the processor, hope it will still work
