Elitebook 8540p
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

I picked up an EliteBook 8540p and it had installed 2x2GB of RAM so naturally, I bought 2x4GB of RAM.

The problem is, although I searched thoroughly, that it seems the memories I bought are not compatible.

What happens: When I press the power button it lights all the led on the keyboard and then they turn off...and then they lit again...and so on, it is caught in a loop. (for a moment, briefly, when I switched the bars between them, is was showing the loading screen, but then it started again with the previously mentioned symptoms)

What I used for upgrade: HX316LS9IBK2/8 HyperX Impact 2X4GB DDR3L 1600MHz CL9 SODIMM

Thank you for your time and expertise,

Leaviu S

Hello Paul,

Thank you for your quick response. I was hoping for a more technical answer than this. But I guess I will have to buy the exact same specs as the ones I have. Latency frequency voltage but 2x4GB and hope it works...

(Although I was looking to improve those aspects too).

First I will try and downgrade from 1600Hz to 1333Hz and let you know how that went.

You're very welcome.

Just make sure that you:

Only buy 1333 MHz memory

It must be 1.5V, not 1.35V

It must have 8 little black memory chips on each side of the circuit board, not 4.

Hello Paul and everyone else,

Like I said, I went on and changed the memory with one with 1333MHz and 1.5V and everything worked as it should.

In fact every aspect of the 4GB RAM is the same as the 2GB one that I had.

DDR3 PC3-10600(1333 MHz), SODIMM, CL9, 1.5V.

It is a 2x4GB from Corsair SKU CMSO8GX3M2A1333C9.

Many thanks,

Leaviu S

Anytime, Leaviu.

Glad to have been of assistance, and thanks for letting us know what memory you used that worked.
