Hi Experts,

I have a HP Pavilion Laptop with 8GB RAM installed currently. I have 2 RAM slots and laptop supports up to 32GB RAM.

Can I buy the 16 GB RAM and install it in the second slot?

Does the combination of 8GB + 16 GB memory works correctly or not?

Thanks!

Hi:

That configuration should work fine but in the lower performing single channel mode.

In order for the memory to run in the higher performing dual channel mode, both memory modules have to be the same capacity (2 x 8 GB, 2 x 16 GB).

Thanks for the update.

Does that mean, if I have a 8 GB + 16 GB combination then the output would be same as 8 + 8 combination?

You're very welcome.

No, you will have 24 GB running in single channel mode.

The jury is still out on what would be better...more memory running in single channel mode or less memory running in dual channel mode.

In your situation, I would definitely go with the 16+8 and then if you want to max it out, all you need to do is to add a second 16 GB memory module.

If you add a second 8 GB module now and decide, gee I should have upgraded to 32 GB, then you wasted your money.

Got it.. Thanks for the detailed explaination.

Currently I have the below Hynix model in the laptop.

Hynix HMA81GS6AFR8N-UH 8GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM

If I decide to add additonal RAM, what all the factors I need to consider?

Should I add from the same manufacturer? Same speed?

You're very welcome.

You should be able to add this compatible 16 GB Crucial memory chip to the existing one.

Are you aware that the Crucial memory report indicates the max for your notebook is limited to 2 x 8 GB?

If you are getting a report that indicates you can install 2 x 16 GB (which is possible since your notebook has an Intel 8th gen core processor), then try the 16 GB memory chip part number I posted above.

I checked the max allowed RAM using below command in cmd. It gave the MaxCapcity as '33554432'.  This means the laptop supports till 32GB right?

Below one is readily available at my location. Is this good?

OK good.

So the report shows you can install 32 GB.

I would get this one.  It is 2666 MHz, but will automatically bridge to 2400 MHz and it is cheaper than the one you posted and I don't even know if the Hynix memory would work or not.

You can also get the Crucial 2400 MHz chip, but is is much more expensive than both of the others.
