HP Pavilion - 15-bc408tx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

I want to upgrade my laptop SSD to a higher capacity SSD (500 - 512 GB).  My laptop is HP Pavilion - 15-bc408tx. I want to know whether it will support a M.2 NVMe SSD or not. Also, which PCIe will it support.

@PiyushR1

its specs

          https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c06074515

It has

  • 1 TB 5400 rpm SATA
  • 128 GB M.2 SSD (also SATA)

You can upgrade 128GB to 512GB or 1TB or 2TB  for example:

          https://www.samsung.com/au/memory-storage/sata-ssd/ssd-860-evo-sata-3-m-2-2tb-mz-n6e2t0bw/

You have to use M.2 SATA drives, M.2 NVMe drives won't work.

Regards.

@Banhien

Shouldn't my laptop also support M.2 NVMe SSD? Like I found a similar question and I think he also has the same model here I think they are saying that it supports.

Is there a way to verify whether it supports or not?

Hi, @PiyushR1

Unfortunately, I think it is a grey area...maybe yes, maybe no.

Chapter 1, pages 4 and 5 of the service manual show the supported drive types.

Maintenance and Service Guide HP Pavilion Notebook PC

The info at the bottom of page 4 indicates the M.2 slot only supports SATA M.2 SSD's.

But at the top of page 5, it indicates the slot supports Intel Optane™ (3D Xpoint) Solution PCIe Gen3x2 M.2.

PCIe = NVMe.

These folks installed a NVMe SSD in different model 15-bc4xx notebooks and it worked.

Solved: Does my M.2 slot support NVme ? hp-bc404nw - HP Support Community - 7974506

But this person installed a NVMe SSD in a 15-bc4xx notebook and reported that it did not work.

If you can purchase a NVMe SSD from somewhere that will take returns if it doesn't work, I would go for it.
