SSD upgarde on HP Pavilion dv6

I have taken an Image backup of my HP Pavilion dv6 then removed the HDD.

I have inserted a new SSD but it is not beeing seen by the system (rather, I get a "Load an Operating System onto your Disk")  However, when I boot up from the Image BackUP-CD, the SSD is not found.

Update oin this.... On reinserting the original HDD I find I can connect my new, unformatted SSD as an external drive.  It won't show in File Explorer but is visible if I open up Disk Management.

The gist of it:

1. Make bootable USB/CD for gparted and clonezilla.

2. Have both HDD and SSD connected to a PC or notebook, internally and/or  externally.

3. Shrink HDD C: drive if SSD is smaller in capacity than HDD. gparted can be used here.

4. Clone partition table from HDD to SSD, If msdos partition use sfdisk, if gpt partition use sgdisk

5. Copy partitions from HDD to SSD using clonezilla, one partition at a time.

gparted, clonezilla are free software.

Thanks Brian, however, my SSD is not found on my HP Laptop, so no 3rd Party Cloning App will help this.  My issue is (not) being able to see the drive

See my updated post. Connect HDD and SSD to any pc or notebook, as long as you can boot USB/CD from it.

You can connect both internally and/or externally via USB enclosure.

Boot gparted and you will be surprise what harddisk it can see.

ian, many thanks for your hepful replies.  However, the problem I have is that I want my Laptop to be able to see the device when NOT running a Windows system, i.e. I am on a basic load, from a CD created by Macrium Reflect, a loadable CD which looks for a backed-up file (which it finds) and which I want to u=install onto the blank SSD (whiuch isn't being found).  Hope this decsription helps!!

Did you try a bootable gparted CD or USB? gparted boots into Linux not Windows, and will scan your notebook for all connected storage devices.

Not yet, first of all I am trying to Clone the syste m whilst running on the OLD HDD - to the SSD connected via USB (which, as I said previously, was seen o the system).

Clone running as we speak (text!!)   When it has finished I shall see if the system will boot up off it (this will be in several hours as I shall be away for some time).
