I ran the HP battery recall utility on my machine and it came back as not covered. So I got a Torx screw driver and took the laptop apart. The battery had all the cells blown up like a baloon.  I removed the batetry and running off just the power supply.  I ordered a replacement battery.

Shame on you HP for not covering this as a recall. This is certainly a safety issue. This is probably going to be the last HP computer I will purchase based on how they have handeled this issue.

You are losing a long time customer.....

@MissVicious

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).

If you are unfamiliar with how the Forum's private message capability works, you can learn about that here.

Thank you! I did the same and I don't qualify for the recall. I asked my computer repair guy to order me a new battery, so he took the battery out to find the number, etc, but my keyboard doesn't work when there's no battery in there! So strange (I have a Spectre 360). So, now I have to work with the bulging battery in the computer until a new one comes on Monday. I hope the battery doesn't explode before then...

@kevin-t

Thank you. Nobody has contacted me yet and I have my local computer repair guy fixing the issue now since now the mouse pad is starting to bluge up and the space bar has stopped working (I am not forced to use an external keyboard). He tried to remove the battery so I could work directly off of the main power, but it looks like the keyboard only works when the battery is installed (even an external keyboard!)

@kevin-t,

I have the exactly same issue.

HP Spectre x360 15" 2017.

Condition: as brand new. Was mostly used in desktop mode - 99.9% of time sitting on a desktop.

Warranty expired in May 2018.

Currently the battery area is swollen and the touch pad popped out. The lid does not close. The laptop rocks on its "belly" due to the deformity.

I just ran HP Battery Program Validation Utility and it says "No Recalled Battery Detected". The CT# 6FZER04TZ7501Y.

I contacted HP support 2 days ago and the only reply I got so far is:

Thank you for contacting HP Support.  This email confirms your request for service; the details of your Case are below.

Please DO NOT REPLY to this email.  It is sent from an unmonitored automatic service.

There is no link/way to check status of the case. There are no follow up messages so far. That is not a right way to run customer support, HP.

My husband has been running his laptop with a swollen battery for like almost a year!

the touch pad and keyboard have been swollen. we were going to have someone at Geeksquad look at it and they wont touch it with a 10 ft pole!  they wont service it becuase THEY are afraid it will blow up!

Is HP going to replace these? I guess we are sitting on a timebomb???

Can someone at HP contact me as well???

The repair is simple, six torq screws in the back. There is one cable and two screws to remove from the battery. It won’t explode unless you puncture it. I found a replacement battery on eBay or you can pay full price at HP.com for a new one.

Hi jigsawpub

My computer repair guy fixed it for me and it was very easy. It's not going to explode just by taking it out. If you want to wait for HP to do it, good luck, but I wouldn't hold my breath and I'd just recommend getting it done ASAP.

While I say it was easy, I did encounter the following issues, which may or may not affect your husband's computer:

- First we took the battery out to avoid the risk of it exploding in my computer and we agreed that I would just keep it plugged in until the new battery arrived. Problem is, the keyboard didn't work without the battery plugged in. Even a USB keyboard didn't work. So, we had to install the old battery and wait for the new one to arrive.

- After we plugged the battery back in, everything worked except the space bar. So, then I still had to use a USB keyboard.

But, once the new battery arrived, my computer guy installed it - very quickly - and everything worked as per normal.

I hope that helps!

Good luck with that. I waited and followed up, no response. It cost me less than $50 for a used battery on eBay
