Operating System: Chrome OS

I have a Chromebook whose touchpad doesn't work at all. It was a gradual thing. I tried all the common remedies - drumming, hitting reset button, on/off, but to no avail. Then tried a hard reset, after which a new snag developed - it no longer turns on automatically when the lid is opened. Anyone have a tried-and-true remedy?
