I am totally amazed and extremely disappointed with HP for building (and selling) a silver laptop with silver keys that DOES NOT have a keyboard backlight.
All reviews I have since read states you must use the backlight to see the keyboard!
I just purchased a new laptop and assumed HP would not deliver a sub-par device, but they sure did and working with them to return it they basically said well you should have read the technical specs. Yes, it didn't say back-lighted keyboard but you would have expected a company like HP would not sell one without it after leading reviews say you need it to see the keys.
This is a warning for all community members looking to purchase a laptop from HP.
READ ALL TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS AND DON'T TRUST WHAT THEY SAY.
DON'T WORK WITH THEIR SUPPORT OR SALES TEAMS - THEY JUST SUCK!

You will be worsen with silver backlit keyboard.
I don't know why they (HP, Dell ..) make that option (backlit keyboard on silver cover). They may remove the backlit option because too many people complained.

I actually agree with you -- I had a pretty Sprectre that had both silver keyboard and the backlit feature. What a nice little computer - sleek and fun to use.
The backlit keyboard was only really useful when the ambient lighting in the room was dimmed. In normal lighting conditions, the backlit did naught to help with visual key recognition. That's a fancy way of saying it was difficult to see the keys in a lighted room.
Personally, I don't think anyone should be able to purchase a computer of any brand that includes a silver keyboard without first signing a waiver that says the customer understands that silver or white keyboards are meant for touch-typists.
I am sorry this happened to you.
Practice might help - typing responds to developing muscle memory needed for the task.
Perhaps try to find some key stickers that identify the keys in black text.
