I did diskpart clean.  Are you saying "clean all" does more?

I'll give that a try.  I do see now that clean all zeros the disk and hence does more than simply clean.  It's worth a try.  The one think I did notice along the way is that I did get an error message that the backup partition table was corrupted.

I think you're right.  Given that I have a good image backup, I think I'm going to replace the drive.

The annoying thing about this (one of many actually),  is that the checks I did for updates did not reveal this update.

Well what do you know! Even a broken clock is right twice a day 😁

I'm glad you got it straightened out with just a flash to its firmware....

Firmware updates are hardware level updates and not always shown (I think).
