As the title suggests, my USB hard drive randomly disconnects and immediately reconnects when not connected to power, causing programs on that hard drive to quit.

It's worth noting that this situation can also occur when the device is connected to a power source, but less frequently and without causing the application to crash.

I have used the latest BIOS firmware, checked the power options and turned off USB power saving, and also turned off power saving options for all USB hubs in Device Manager.

Hi @huoyan1231,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're dealing with an intermittent connectivity issue with your USB-C hard drive, especially when your system is on battery power. Here are some steps you can try to resolve this:

Power Management Settings:

  • Navigate to Windows Power Options. You can do this by right-clicking on the battery icon in the system tray and selecting "Power Options."
  • Click on “Change plan settings” next to the selected power plan, then click on “Change advanced power settings.”
  • Look for "USB settings" and expand it. Then expand "USB selective suspend setting" and set it to "Disabled."
  • In the “PCI Express” section, set "Link State Power Management" to "Off."

Device Manager Configuration:

  • Open Device Manager by right-clicking on the Start button.
  • Expand the “Universal Serial Bus controllers” section.
  • Right-click on your USB Root Hubs and select “Properties.”
  • Go to the “Power Management” tab and uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.”

BIOS/UEFI Settings:

  • Since you mentioned that your BIOS is up to date, check for any power management settings related to USB ports in the BIOS that you can adjust to maintain continuous power delivery.

Check for Hardware Issues:

  • Use different USB-C ports if available to see if the issue persists.
  • Try using another USB-C cable to rule out a cable defect.
  • If possible, test the hard drive on another computer to isolate whether the problem lies with the drive itself.

Driver Updates:

Battery Calibration:

  • Perform a battery calibration using HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI or HP Support Assistant to ensure that the battery is providing an accurate status report to the system.

    I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
