I did it in 2014, first from 4gb to 8gb then to 16gb. I'm not remembering the BIOS version. I had updated to latest one recently before giving it to my bro in law.
Memory was Hynix 1600MHz DDR3L PC3L 128000 RAM.
The exact same issue you're facing was one of my initial query in this forum. And HP expert @Huffer suggested me to go ahead with the upgrade regardless of BIOS version. And it worked.

Sorry to jump in,
Manual: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04069163
It should take upto 12gb or even 16gb max (two 8gb sticks).
Manual of this model series says 12gb max, but I have to think it would work at 16gb max even
My Pavilion series also has a similar 12gb max Manual, but 16gb is easily working at present.
I'll not rely on specifications page in case of upgrades.

I also have a Pavilion 17-e019dx intel i5 with 4GB of Ram installed. I went ahead and used a new/used 2x8 16GB chip set I had from another laptop. Works perfect and without any issues. Thanks for the information.
