Thank you for your message. Your suggested methods are actually what I was planning to do next. But that will take a while. First, I need to get a new hard drive, most likely a SSD for better performance. I don't need much disk space anyway since it is only an office computer. 

 

The other thing would be to play around with the RAM slots and chips. Maybe one of them is broken. Will see. I'll let you guys know.

 

Okay no there is one more thing you could help me with. How do I open my laptop? I undid all the screws once and tried to get the back cover off that thing but it still was stuck somehow. There were no screws visible, the CD/DVD drive was taken out, no screws there.

I read the post. Great troubleshooting and Kudos to you for that.:) I will send you the user guide link: http://hp.care/2sC3SKJ that will help you here. Please look up pages 77-78 to remove the optical drive.

Also look up the list of contents for further assistance to remove other parts of the computer.

Many thanks for the user guide!

That will make it much easier to find the correct way how to remove the hard drive, I suppose. Hope the instructions are detailed enough. I haven't had a look at them yet, as I am and will be too busy in order to make sense out of my latop for the next 2 weeks or so.

hi there.  i read your post t to someone about attaching an image  and you said there is an IMAGE ICON.  Would you kindly tell me where and on WHICH PAGE DO YOU HVAE TO BE to find this icon.  For instance, i am at the moment on the page where you reply to an earlier post but just cannot see any icon that would enable me to attach a photo or image.

So I am back...

 

I put in a new hard drive - a SSD. Runs much better. But still had the same 4.6GB hardware reserved. 

To test my RAM, I used only one memory stick, then the other. No changes, still huge hardware reserved memory.

Then I switched the two RAM sticks. Now it's down to 828 MB hardware reserved. Better than the 4.6GB before, but still way too high. Don't know what this is.

 

Can I somewhere somehow change how much memory my graphics card gets allocated? That's the only thing I can think of that still uses much of my memory. I don't use any graphics intensive software, don't play games, don't even watch HD videos or so. So maybe reducing the graphics memory would help a bit more?

 

But in any case, switching the two RAM sticks made a huge difference from 4.6GB hardware reserved down to 828MB. It's still the same two sticks and Windows 10 still recognises a total of 6GB RAM as before, but of which roughly 5.2GB are now available/usable. Together with the SSD the old machine runs like an Olympic sports champion again! 😉

I got an email to notify me that my post of 17th July 2017 had been answered by you at ‎07-31-2017 01:49 AM .  Has there been a mistake ?  My post asked about attaching photos to a message to be posted but your reply addresses technical issues to do with the HP Notebook etc.   Just wondered if you meant to send it back to me, Wallybrite or was it sent in error?
