To clarify, the keyb backlight is not controlled by the OS nor the BIOS. It is entirely independent. However I think it is the OS that sends the command to turn on or off or fade. Before I reinstalled my OS recently my kb would fade out then waving a hand in front of the NXP sensor would turn it on again. That of course is the OS sending commands to the kb processor. However TBH I found that to be a pain. So I uninstalled the NXP sensor software. Now its F5 to toggle on/off.

I have figured out a way To keep the keyboard light on go to the touchpad settings make sure the touchpad is in the on position press down the touchpad I press it in the left corner completely pressed down while holding it down turn off the touchpad with a mouse make sure it does it in one Motion meaning if it goes Auster on it won’t work press the corner down hold it switch to off move the mouse away from the button let go of the touchpad the The keyboard light will stay on as long as you use the laptop your touchpad will not work that is the only downfall but if you have a mouse connected it does it really bother me you might have to do it once a twice to get the hang of Switching it perfect but it definitely works been doing it for about a week now when you restart the computer or shut it off you just have to redo it every time I know that sucks but at least you’ll have the keyboard light on until hopefully they find a fix for it

I commented above on a temporary fix for it but you don’t have to do anything like download it or change anything on the internals of the laptop check it out it’s one of the Comments above my reply is in there

Unfortunately I lost the utiliity when I reinstalled the OS but this is exactly what I had: https://support.hp.com/gb-en/document/c03228731. I was pretty useless tbh so I'm not sorry it's gone.

The last couple of weeks I have been in contact with HP UK via Whatsapp. So far, they have not been able to help me! The support guy keeps on directing me to the Bios but in my BIOS the are NO advanced options!! I find it also very annoying that the backlist turns off after 10-15 sec. if the keyboard has not been touched. I can hardly believe this cannot be adjusted to 3 or 5 minutes!!?? Who can help? Thx in advance!

As I already wrote you won't find anything in the BIOS. The keyboard has its own processor that can turn the backlight on or off or fade them. Without any OS at all you can still turn the backlight on or off. On my Envy fn-f3 turns it on or off and for off it fades out. It does this before Windows has booted. However HP have a service which is installed in the OS to watch the NXP near field proximity sensor and send that same command to the keybaord. If your backlight is going off after just 15 seconds it suggests to me it's this service which is broken. I am sure HP wouldn't ship a laptop with only 15 seconds. I am sure that is the problem and I am VERY sure it has nothing to do with the BIOS. I would think there is noone left at HP who actually knows about these low level services. I do know I had a HP sort of dashboard where I could do various things including change the NXP nearfield timer. It also had 'coolsense', some sort of service that seemed to be part of the same package. If you could get that from HP that would probably do it. I did find a driver on Softpedia for the HP Elitebook. Maybe you can find the correct one for you on the net.

I think the major reason this isn't work for other (me included) is that HP is also using the ELAN touch pad. So when you change the settings in the BIOS there is not a
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SynTP\Parameters
I am pretty sure even if you could find the ELAN registry the driver it self would not work.

That is absolutely brilliant!!
I've struggled with this RIDICULOUS keyboard backlight issue for a year. I gave up on it for the last 10 months and finally checked back and found this forum.
And I'd like to add my comments that it it tonally INEXCUSABLE for HP to be so arrogant and basically stupid to tell me how long my keyboard should stay on, and that THEY are saving me battery (even when plugged in). It's arrogant and it's stupid and it's such an easy fix for them.
I regret purchasing this HP-15 laptop a year ago, as I have another issue .. If anyone can direct me to another forum for this I'd thank you)
1) The screen saver comes on EVEN though my power settings are set correctly not to timeout. I know how to set this, but it ignores the setting.
2) Once the screen saver comes on, it totally messes up my extended monitor (connected thru the HDMI port) and brings everything back to the native laptop monitor. So then i have to move the windows back to the extended monitor.
3) In addition, the native monitor is HORRIBLE. Yellowish faded tinge, nowhere near as bright as my old Asus or even my extended cheap external monitor). I sent back to HP last January to fix and they claimed to fix these but did NOTHING.)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
And thanks for the backlight fix!!

I can help with point 2. I use a little exe called PersistentWindows. It works just fine with my 4 additional screens. All my layout is restored on unlock or wake-up. It flickers a bit whilst everything is put back to where you left it but I think that just adds to the experience. Good luck! And yes, the backlight timeout is RIDICULOUS! I keep a small lamp on next to my laptop. Not ideal but what can we do? HP just aren't listening.
