hp g60 (nine year old pc)
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

why is it that updating to windows 10 from windows 7 can be done, but there is no audio because the appropriate audio driver is unavailable?   does anyone know how to download the appropriate driver, either hp, generic, or otherwise, so that one needs not scrap a perfectly good computer.  hp is of zero help and all they can tell me is that my pc is obsolete and that i should take it to a local serviceman.   i'm sure this issue is frustrating thousands of people with so-called "obsolete" equipment that simply want to convert to windows 10.   has anyone found a workaround to this?

Hi, @inkling

If your notebook has 4 GB of memory, I know you are not going to believe this, but for some crazy reason having 4 GB of memory installed on that platform causes the sound not to work.

Try this workaround for that if your notebook has 4 GB of memory...

A problem with the Conexant audio means that you may hear no sound in Windows 10 even though everything appears to be working correctly.

Microsoft suggests running msconfig.exe, click on the Boot tab. Click the Advanced options button, check the Maximum memory box, and set the value to 3072.

Then restart the PC.

dear sir

thanks for you quick reply to my query!  last night i was on the microsoft chat line and proposed your possible solution to them.  the answer was that is would have no effect in restoring the audio after another changeover to windows 10.  therefore i refrained from doing the change.  after the agent checked for an updated audio driver from hp, he concluded that there was not one to be found and for that reason, and the fact that my g60 notebook was old and obsolete, going to 10 was not an option.  therefore i am still on windows 7,  although a change to 10 to try your possible solution is not out out the question.  i'm a little reluctant to do it again, as i have done it at least 4 or 5 times now, and the process takes 3 or 4 hours.   so i'd like to ask you if your method would make up for the fact that switching to 10 would involve using the same audio driver, which is dated 2009 or 2010?   short of finding a viable solution to being able to change to windows 10, what is your opinion of staying on 7 after january 14/2020.  i am thinking of doing that.   would that be too risky, or would my virus protection (norton) be enough to stop any viruses or malware to my pc?   thanks again, and any assistance with this would be appreciated!

dear sir

thanks for the speedy reply.  prior to any download, such as the one you provided, i would like to know exactly what that download would be, and how it would alleviate the issue i have.   since the pc in question is 10 years old, i've been told by microsoft that it is not possible to switch from windows 7 to 10 and still get the audio to work.  there are no audio drivers provided by hp other than the same old ones dated 2009 or 2010.  having said that i have already done the switch over to 10 at least 4 times in the past and everything runs fine except for the lack of audio.  short of finding a solution to this, i may have to keep using win 7 after january 14.  what is your opinion of doing that.  would my norton virus protection be enough to catch any potential viruses or malware?   any advice on these issues would be greatly appreciated................thanks!

You're very welcome.

You have nothing to lose by changing the memory setting using MSConfig.

If you do a search on the forum of G60 no audio windows 10, you will see that I have proposed this solution to many forum members and it worked for them.

I don't have the time to search for all of the posts that were solved using this method, but here is one, which shows it works.

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Audio/G60-No-sound/m-p/6244323#M86319

The sp71886 audio driver that Banhien posted has no chance of working because that driver is for notebooks with the IDT audio chip and yours has the Conexant audio chip.

alright sir, i will change over to windows 10 and try your workaround, as, like you say, at this point i have nothing to lose!  i will let you know how it works out................fingers crossed!!

after switching over to 10,  your method proved to work just as you said it would and i was pleasantly surprised.  there is one issued i have now though.   after the pc wakes from sleep there is no audio.   once a restart is performed the audio works again.  might there be an simple solution to rectify this quirk? ... thanks!

You're very welcome.

Unfortunately, I don't know what you can do about that, and no one else that I recall had that issue.

One of the first troubleshooting steps I do when things act oddly, is to disable the fast startup setting in the power options in the windows control panel.

That will make the PC boot up slower but it may also take care of the issue.

If it doesn't you can always change the setting back if you want.

Here is how to disable the fast startup setting...

That would be the only suggestion I can offer.

tried your suggestion to no avail.  got ms agent on remotely to try and fix it but nothing they tried worked.  the last thing done was an "in place" update of win 10 but that proved fruitless, and only served to reset that memory amount back to 4096.  i've reset it back to 3072 to regain access of the audio.  just gonna have to live with the "sleep" quirk.  that fix u provided me was a real lifesaver though and i can't thank you enough!
