Product: compaq presario cq56
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)

The Prseario CQ56 laptop has one 2 gb 2rx8 pc2 6400s 666-12 stick of memory in 1 slot in it. My question is can I stick  one stick of 1gb 2rx16 pc2 5300s 555-12 in the 2nd slot to give me a total of 3 gb's of memory to make the laptop work faster?

That would not be a good idea.

 

The best practice is to follow is to always use a matching set of identical memory. 

 

Purchase a pair of guaranteed compatible memory modules from a well known memory maker.

What could happen if I were to stick that 1gb stick in the 2nd slot with the 2gb stick in the bottom slot?
