The Prseario CQ56 laptop has one 2 gb 2rx8 pc2 6400s 666-12 stick of memory in 1 slot in it. My question is can I stick one stick of 1gb 2rx16 pc2 5300s 555-12 in the 2nd slot to give me a total of 3 gb's of memory to make the laptop work faster?

The notebook may or may not boot to Windows.
It might not even start up with the press of the power button. It could even work but it is a gamble.
Upgrading memory in non-standard (best practice fashion) is always a bit of a crap shoot.

That would not be a good idea.
The best practice is to follow is to always use a matching set of identical memory.
Purchase a pair of guaranteed compatible memory modules from a well known memory maker.
