Hello, My laptop is glitching whilst streaming video under power - it is fine on battery.

--

The laptop is only 3 months old but I'm disappointed with poor performance (for an i5 8Gb) whilst doing something as basic as streaming video (either Zoom or TV catchup) when my 10 year old i3 Dell handled this fine! But it is only happening when plugged in.

--

I've noticed on Task Manager that, whilst plugged in, the GPU 3D (Intel UHD Graphics) keeps peaking every 4-5 secs or so (I couldn't attach screenshots) which then causes the video to stutter and causes a horrid sound crackle. As mentioned it only happens when plugged in - in fact upon doing so, it sounds as though the notebook is spooling up for greater performance as the fan kicks in etc (even though I believe I have everything set the same for battery op or power op). I don't mind any of this so long as it performs, yet it is worse than when it was performing fine, beforehand, on battery! Unplugging results in a probably one more peaks and then stable regardless of how many things I have open or what level of video I am streaming.

--

Any help would be appreciated but I am not overly technical with laptop architecture so words of one syllable would be appreciated 😉

--

Thanks in advance.

--

The system has an Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-1035G1 CPU @ 1.00GHz with 8Gb of RAM and 4Gb in with Intel UHD Graphics (not sure if it is shared - I'm not that technical). It is running the latest BIOS (previously passed by HP in an earlier attempt to overcome this) and driver 26.20.100.7926

@Padre182 Please follow the steps listed below to improve the FPS on your Intel Graphics adapter:

  • Update the graphics card driver
  • Increase the amount of RAM - by increasing the shared memory under system properties > Advanced > Performance settings > Advanced > Change Virtual memory > use the recommended file size for paging.
  • Make sure the graphics card is not in power saving mode - If you are after maximum performance of you Intel HD Graphics, make sure you have turned off all of its power saving features. That is why in order to achieve maximum performance you have to make sure that your Windows power plan is not on Power Saver, you can use the Balanced or the High Performance power plan. You can also click the Intel HD Graphics driver tray icon (it should be near the clock in the taskbar), select Graphics Properties, then click the Power tab and select Maximum Performance.

Please, note that although this tip will certainly improve your Intel HD Graphics' performance it will also increase the power it draws, as well as the heat it generates under heavy load (which is the case for games). Caution is advised, especially if you are on a laptop that experiences temperature problems.
  • Set the 3D preference of Intel HD Graphics to "Performance" - This trick will help you improve the frame rate in games. To apply it click the Intel HD Graphics driver tray icon, select Graphics Properties, then click the 3D tab and move the slider to Performance. In this way, you sacrifice a bit of image quality for improved 3D performance, which should lead to a few more frames per second (FPS)

Hello Riddle_Decipher,

Thanks for your reply (and the welcome to the community).  Sorry for the delay in responding to your prompt suggestions.

The graphics card is already on the latest driver (confirmed by Intel Graphics Command Centre).

I have 8Gb of RAM (4x the amount that my old Dell had which never struggled with streaming).

The graphics card (in the native IGCC app) was already set to maximum performance.

I've now been in to Power and changed the Intel Graphics Settings / Intel Graphics Power Plan from Balanced (on power; it is left on balanced for battery) to Maximum performance.

And, it is still happening.  Today, I have the following open:

- Chrome open, (with 18 tabs open)

- Mail

- OneNote

- IGCC

- Power

- Task Manager

Task Manger is fairly stable throughout, showing the following whilst streaming:

- CPU: 37-40%  Today the glitches are happening when the CPU drops to about 10% for a second or so which I have not seen before.

- Memory: stable, flat line at 72%

- Disk: 1%

-GPU: running at about 25-28% - but stable.  It would then, also drop to one point of 0%, when glitching, also which I have not seen before (previously the glitches spiked above 30%).

It also happens when not in full screen mode ie playing in the background whilst I type this.  The only major change since my testing and first post is that Update  KB4550945 has automatically installed (which slows my start up immensely but that is a different matter!).  I haven't installed the Intel Graphics - Windows 10 DCH Drivers as it informed that it was a generic driver and to stick with the drivers from HP.

As before, all is fine whilst on battery alone - so I am mystified.  I think that it is fair to say that one would expect lesser performance whilst on battery, especially as I do have this set to balanced in both IGCC and Power settings yet it runs better whilst not plugged in.  I've even tried turning up the resource values for both DWM.exe and  Chrome but still to no avail.

You help is appreciated but I am not sure what else to do.  As you can imagine, its a bit disappointing on a new machine - and not what I would expect from a 10th Gen i5 with 8Gb of RAM - even if i hadn't got the latest drivers I would have expected that the stock drivers etc would not be too shabby out of the box.  I pushed the spec a little on this new machine due to the amount of loading I was putting my old Dell through with photo editing but, as mentioned before, that was fine with video streaming.  Does it need returning? 😕

I've tried to describe it as best I can but it is something which probably needs to be seen.  Grateful if you have any other thoughts.

Hello Riddle_Decipher,

Thanks again for your post.

As it happend, it was quite bad today, whilst on Zoom.  Again, no problems whilst on battery but once I plugged in CPU was dropping and GPU was spiking at the same time - I could understand the other way so my only thought is that something is telling it to ramp up what it is doing once plugged in - it's certainly not anything I have set as I don't tend to adjust much from stock.

Regrettably, I'll start down the return avenue so thanks for the links etc.  I've given a kudo again and now marked this as the accepted.

All the best

@Padre182 I understand your concern and the decision you've made, although, I would suggest you discuss your options with the phone support team if it isn't too late already and either way, good luck ahead.

And I hope you have a good day.
