Pavilion dv6
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)
My laptop screen has suddenly stopped working. Images display with no problem on external screen. I have tried all the suggestions from HP such as hard restart, resetting the BIOS etc but still does not work. I recently took the laptop apart to clean out the fan and it has worked fine since then, but the other night the screen was working. It shut down when the battery drained. On restart using mains adaptor the following morning, the screen was completely dead. I noticed that if you press on the plug on the screen connector cable where it connects to the motherboard, the screen flashes bright white and the whole laptop powers off suddenly. It will then only power up again if you first remove the battery then replace it. Any ideas why the screen has stopped working?

Why is elusive with electronics....the point is the screen is dead. You have ruled out a motherboard/video card issue by showing that it displays to an external monitor. You need to replace the screen. It is not as hard or expensive as people fear, but to help we need the model number. Lots of dv6s out there made in the last 10+ years.

Thank you very much for your reply. That is very helpful, particularly the link to the manual. So I take it that because it works fine on an external monitor we can rule out any other software or hardware problems other than the screen itself . It did occur to me that, given I had stripped it down just a couple of weeks earlier, I may have disturbed the cable that runs from the motherboard to the screen. Before I order a replacement screen I guess I should be checking that this cable is seated correctly at both ends? Anyway thanks for your very thorough and helpful reply.

Now that you tell me that yes the first thing to do is check the connections.
