HP Spectre x360 - 13-4005dx
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

I just got a new HP Spectre x360 - 13-4005dx and it works quite well EXCEPT that the screen regular goes black for a moment and then flashes back on. Typically black for a fraction of a second--maybe a second or two at most.

HUGELY FRUSTRATING.

I have gone through and updated all of the drivers. Any idea?

thanks,

joel

That doesn't seem normal, and you should just get an exchange. If you got it at Best Buy, it should be a quick exchange (if they're in stock).

Hi Joel,

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.

Oh!  I was looking at this little notebook-- sounds very nice... well, except for the black screen bit.  :indifferent:  I am sorry this has happened...

The BIOS has been out since February so that is plenty of time for your system to have had the latest F.04 Rev.A BIOS installed at the factory.

You have checked and updated what you can... What to do?

I would say that you might call HP and see if they have anything in their database about this -- if they do, it might save a bunch of "well, it could be this or that or this other thing".

If they don't know what it is, then at least you have them on the line and you can ask them what to do to test the hardware the best and quickest way.

Thanks, but no luck after reinstalling the BIOS. I'll try others tomorrow. I'm trying to avoid calling HP...

It is not screen timeout right? I also did notice this issue once in awhile (I wouldn't call it regularly), but I usually just press a key or something to 'wake it', unless it comes back on itself. It happens usually when I am not constantly looking at the screen, so perhaps the effect was minimized. I haven't tried watching movies or anything to see if it happens more often.

Thanks but that is definitely not it. It is like the display driver is crashing and happens several times per hour while I am actively working on it...

Did this start out of box with the unit or did it happen later with the unit?

It started "out of the box". I put that in quotes because it is still happing after a fresh install of Windows.

(I received the computer new almost a week ago and installed a ton of stuff almost immediately--all standard: office, chrome browser, etc, plus a docking station). I was a bit concerned that the docking station drivers had a conflict or something, so I did a fresh install last night and have installed very little--only office--but I'm still having the problem).

Yah, that's what HP Support concluded, too, and so I'm going to be sending it into them...

Thanks, all!

HP Spectre x360 - 13-4005dx purchased on 04/10/2015.

Started having screen flashing on/off which got progressively worse.

Best Buy Geek Squad could not find any problems (no virus, malware, etc.)

I isolated the problem to operating using Wi-Fi.

In my case, using either an AT&T Hot Spot (Netgear) device or a home wireless Wi-Fi caused the problem.

I suggest going to HP update page and download and install BIOS (04/25/2015) and Intel WiFi driver (04/25/2015).

I did this on 05/04/2015 and the problem stopped happening.

If this continues I will be very happy with my new HP Spectre.
