When ever I try and use my laptop on battery power the wifi drops out. It shows it's connected but I cannot browse. Things I have tried - Update card to latest driver, set all battery settings to maximum performance, turn off "let this device turn off" I have even gone as far as replace the battery. I am out of ideas. I'm starting to think it's something to do with a windows update. Any help appreciated.

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries.

The computer will drop its wireless connection when it is unplugged from the AC adapter and starts using battery power. This happens because the power settings are configured to automatically reduce the power to the wireless network adapter, resulting in a smaller broadcast radius. When the broadcast radius falls outside the range of the access point's broadcast radius, the wireless adapter disconnects. Although the device manager can be set to turn off the wireless device to save battery power when the power level is low, this can cause the wireless device to quit while still operating on battery power.

Click on this link: https://support.hp.com/id-en/document/c02693493 follow both.

  • Adjust the wireless network adapter power settings
  • Disable the wireless device's power saving option

Keep me posted, how it goes!

Hi, thanks for your reply.

I have tried both of the things you suggested plus many more.

It never use to happen when I was operating from battery power, that's why it makes me think it is a windows update that has caused it.

What good is a laptop if you can't unplug it?

I suggest you connect the ethernet cable and uninstall the wireless drivers

Have installed the latest drivers and the problem hasn't been fixed.

I went and bought a AC600 dual band USB adapter to try that and the same thing is happening.

Can you think of any thing else?

I'm the Riddle_Decipher & I'm writing on behalf of my colleague @Raj1788, as the tech is out for the day, that said, I have reviewed your concern and the entire conversation, did some research and here's what I recommend:

Go to start, open Control Panel then open Power Options; now you have to click onChange plan settings right in front of "Balanced (recommended)" - below " Plans shown on the battery meter -  after that click on Change advanced power settings now all you need is to find (Wireless Adapter Settings => Power Saving Mode => On battery) and change On battery to Maximum Performance. That's all.

To finish hit the "OK" button.

Keep us posted,

(We shall troubleshoot as a team, fight till the end and emerge - "victorious")
