Microsoft Windows Vista

My father in law's HP PAV DV9000 had a hard drive failure and i recently installed a new SATA 500GB hard drive. I also did a clean install of windows vista Home Premium and replaced the battery.

Everything booted fine and everything seems to be working except i cannot connect to the internet. First I tried to connect with wireless and the machine could not find any networks. There are tons available where I live. Then i tried to hardwire into my modem and that did not work. There was no response from the machine at all when i plugged in the ethernet cable. The WLAN light is orange.

Is there an extra step I am missing to enable internet connected after replacing hard drive and doing clean install of Window vista? Is there some type of hardware that may need to be replaced for wireless to work?

thank you in advance for the help.

Hi:

The chipset driver I posted above will install the:

SM Bus Controller

Coprocessor

Ethernet Controller

The card reader driver will install the 3 base system devices...

This package contains the driver for the Ricoh 5-in-1 Card Reader for the supported notebook models and operating systems.

http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software9/COL19729/ob-55777-1/sp37726.exe

One of the unknown devices needs this driver...

This package contains the software that enables the Quick Launch Buttons on the keyboard and the external Easy Access Buttons Keyboard to be programmed for the supported notebook models and operating systems. This application enables menu control of various bezel buttons, such as volume, internal/external display, and mute on/off; HotKeys; and Docked Events.

http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp40001-40500/sp40139.exe

I would need you to post the hardware ID's for the other unknown device remaining after you install the drivers.

You need to download the driver files onto another PC, copy them to a usb flash drive and install them on your PC with the flash drive.

I am concerned that there is no device listed as a Network Controller showing up in the device manager.

Make sure the front wireless slide switch is to the on position.  I forgot which way turns it on, so slide it both ways,

If it is, there is a good possibility the motherboard has a problem.  A very common problem in the dv6000 and dv9000 model series.  The motherboard overheats and cuts the power to the socket the wireless card is plugged into.

To confirm that the motherboard has an issue, install the HP wireless assistant software, restart the PC and see if you can turn the wireless on by using this software.

This package contains the HP Wireless Assistant for the supported notebook models and operating systems. The HP Wireless Assistant is a user application that provides a way to control the enablement of the radios for individual wireless devices (such as Bluetooth, WLAN, or WWAN devices) and that shows the state of the radios for these wireless devices.

Unless the Recovery media was used to reinstall Vista, there probably is a driver missing.  Look in "Device Manager" for components that need drivers installed.  Then download the needed drivers from the support page.

BTW: does this page describe the PC in question?

Hi, @Jaimetyler88 :

You probably do need to install some drivers to get some devices to work.

Please post the product number for your dv9000.

The product number can be found on the same sticker as the serial number.

There are several hundred model dv9000's ranging from 9000 to 9999, but they all show dv9000 on the display bezel.

Depending on the model there are different chipset drivers.   The models with AMD processors need the chipset driver installed for the ethernet (wired network) to function.

Please post the hardware ID's for the devices in the device manager that need drivers.

Use this guide to find the hardware ID's...

https://www.howtogeek.com/193798/how-to-find-drivers-for-unknown-devices-in-the-device-manager/

The wireless card will be labeled as a Network Controller when no driver is installed.

HI;

Below is the link to the support and driver page for that model notebook.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-pavilion-dv9700-entertainment-notebook-pc-series...

You do need to install the chipset driver to install the ethernet adapter.

This package provides the driver for the NVIDIA nForce AR Chipset in the supported notebook models and operating systems.

http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp37501-38000/sp37730.exe

I looked up the parts list for that model, and it indicates that it has a Broadcom wireless card, so see if this driver works...

This package contains the Broadcom Wireless LAN Drivers that are required to enable the integrated Broadcom Wireless LAN Adapter in supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system.
