Hello again Yawallabob.

The application most certainly is supported by Windows 7.  I currently have it installed on my ProBook.  Here is a link.

However, that error is what is called a "Fatal Error" and is normally a problem within Windows.  I believe this one is easily solvable however.  Try the following.

  1. Click Start, type %TEMP%, and press Enter.  This loads your TEMP folder.
  2. Delete everything in this folder (that it will allow you).
  3. Close the TEMP folder.
  4. Click Start, go to "All Programs," and "Accessories."
  5. Right click on "Command Prompt" and select "Run as Administrator."
  6. Type the command "Msiexec /unregister" without quotations and press Enter.
  7. Then type the command "Msiexec /reregister" without quotations and press Enter.
  8. Reboot your computer and try the installation again.
  9. Post the result.

If you go to your Device Manager and expand all of the sections do you have any "Unknown" or "Other" devices listed?  Is anything listed in the "Network Adapters" section other than your Ethernet card?  From everything you're saying it does sound like the card itself has failed.

Let me know the result and have a great evening.

Went into Programfiles(x86) and Wireless Assistant is there tried running it as administrator, couldnt get anything to run.

The only other thing in Network Adaptors is a    Realtek PCIe GBE Family controller below the

Hello again Yawallabob.

I agree with your original hypothesis that this is a hardware problem.  Normally the device isn't detected when a piece of hardware fails.  However, the problem has continued to occur after verifying the connection, updating the BIOS, uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers, and even occurs on two different operating systems.  I think the next step is going to be replacing the card.

If your notebook is in warranty (you can check here) I suggest you contact HP Support.  You should also contact HP Support if you don't want to swap the part yourself.  However, this is a very simple repair.  The number for US/Canadian customers is 1-800-474-6836.  If you're in another part of the world you'll need to visit HP Support Worldwide to get your region's contact information.

If you'd like to replace the part yourself I have some information for you.  Here is a link to your notebook's Maintenance and Service Guide.  It will be helpful for disassembling the notebook and replacing the part.  You can order the part through your notebook's HP Parts Surfer page.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.  Have a wonderful day and a great weekend!

I have the same problem. It happend after HP support center updated some drivers.

I am seeing a yellow exclamation mark on the WLAN adapter driver in the Device Manager. I tried a lot of things but firgured out this;

Windows is rejecting the Driver Signature and therefor it is not allowed to do its work. You need to disable Driver Signature Enforcement to make it work.

Restart your computer and press f8 during startup and from the displayed options select "Disable Driver Signature Enforcement"

When the desktop appears you should have the driver fully functional.

Now you'll have to do it everytime your computer starts. This is only a temporary solution to the problem. I'm working on how to permanently solve it.

Install HP wireless assistant (this will install an icon to windows task bar). I did not have this before.. it's free.. just google it and go to the link for HP wireless assistant.. Reboot then double click HP wireless assistant icon in the task bar to open the program window. it will show there is no connectivity, confirming your dilemma Next, hold down the stubborn wireless button (mine is above the F8 key) for 30 seconds and make sure it stays blue (activated/enabled) for the entire time it is depressed Release the button Now, push the same button one time and release immediately. It should switch from orange to blue and REMAIN BLUE! Enabled!
