Hello,
I am using an HP Pavilion 14-al015na which I've had brand new for 9 months. My laptop was being painfully slow a few days ago, however, after doing a prompted Windows Update (I'd been "snoozing" the update reminder a few times) this resolved the slowness issue.
Anyway, I have just connected to my guesthouse's WiFi (currently travelling at the moment) and a Windows Stop error came up with the message "IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL", the laptop then restarted. I tried again twice and the same thing happened. Before this happened I'd been connected on my phone's hotspot with no issues. My phone also connects to the WiFi with no issues. Never had this error message before.
Would appreciate any advice on how to troubleshoot. One thing I haven't done yet is take the laptop somewhere else to try and connect to the WiFi but will do that and see what happens.
Many thanks

Hello, @kmcgregor - Greetings!
Thanks for reaching out to the HP Support Forums! I'd be glad to be of your assistance 🙂
I understand that you are losing the Wi-Fi capability after the Windows 10 updates. I will definitely try and help you fix the issue 🙂
First, perform the Windows 10 updates on your PC, restart the machine and then check. If the issue persists, open the command prompt as an administrator. Simply search for "Command prompt" and when the search results display the command prompt, right-click and choose "Run as administrator".
Once the command prompt opens, copy this command and press enter:
sc config storsvc type= own
Restart the PC and check.
If the issue persists, open the command prompt again as mentioned above and copy the following commands, and press "enter" after each one:
- netsh int tcp set heuristics disabled
- netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
- netsh int tcp set global rss=enabled
- netsh int tcp show global (To Check if All settings have taken effect - Make sure all settings are disabled except Receive-Side Scaling State.)
Reboot the system and see if it works.
If the issue persists, please reply with the name of your Wireless adapter. Right-click on the Windows logo and select device manager. Expand the "Network driver" option to find the network adapter name / card.
Let me know if that works!
Good luck 🙂

I've done the updates and wifi connects fine.
But my laptop continues to lag. It started doing this a couple of days before the Windows Updates that affected the wifi.
For example, at the time i was working on an excel and word document, just typing or copying information across and the programs would lag and then be unresponsive.
I did a virus check, all fine and i did a check disk, all fine.
Laptop doesn't make any unusual noises, i.e. hard drive doesn't struggle.
I have a 1tb hard drive which is no where near full.
Do you have any suggestions to check into.other problems that may be causing this lag? My laptop is still under warranty but I'm abroad at the moment.
I can make do at the moment but it's frustrating that this has suddenly happened. I don't use the laptop frequently and I just use it for web browsing and working on my blog.
Many thanks for your help so far, really appreciate it 😊

Hello, @kmcgregor
Thanks for the update & glad to know that the wireless issue is now resolved 🙂 Good job!
Now, to assist you with the notebook performance issue, I need to know about the task manager details.
Open the windows task manager. Check the CPU usage, memory etc. Check whether the CPU usage, memory is off the charts.
Also, try to delete your cache files and the temporary files. This will help you increase the browsing speed. You can use software such as "CCleaner" or "Wise cleaner" etc to clean up your PC if needed. Simply search in Google for these programs to download and install the same.
Alternatively, let’s try the steps below to try and fix the issue:
Disable Programs Running at Startup:
- Press the Windows button and "R" at the same time.
- Type “msconfig” without the quotes in the run window and press "Enter" on the keyboard.
- The Task manager window pops up. Click on the "Startup" tab and you will see a list of programs that run at startup.
- Right-click on the applications that you don't want to run at startup and select "Disable".
If the issue persists, try some additional steps as suggested here: http://hp.care/2u61oaS
Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!
Good luck 🙂

I have cleared the cache, temporary files and run ccleanup.
I also installed Malwarebytes and done a scan. It turned up 1 threat (PUP.Optional.Booking - have no idea what that means).
Checked start up files and I now just have Google Drive starting up. I installed this after the slowness issue started.
So on the task manager it looks like this:
CPU - 28-30%
Memory - 86-90%
Disk - this fluctuates, sometimes less than 10% then jumps to 90%
I can send a photo of the task manager if that helps.
Many thanks for your continued help.

Hello, @kmcgregor
Restart the PC and check whether the changes that you made have helped in resolving the issue.
If the issue still persists, follow the HP Guided Troubleshooter here: HP PC Hardware Diagnostics | HP® Support
Let me know if that helps!
Cheers 🙂
