That's why I moved it to own topic.
Where it's sitting now, being ignored by all the non-dv2000 owners who aren't having the problem.
My problem is entirely related "with" this guide.
- I've just installed Windows 7 on my Series dv2000 portable.
- It's not working properly—and my best guess is that it's an incompatibility between the computer and a driver related to graphics or power management (chipset?).
Which is exactly what you're discussing here. Maybe I'm missing something.

Hi again,
@Jamesnb wrote:Regarding to the screen capture, I will try and upload the mov as soon as I got some free time.
Tnx.
I really appreciate it.
@Jamesnb wrote:Regarding to the Nvidia Driver, here is the info I got from Device Manager:
Driver Provider: Nvidia
Driver Date: 6/7/2010
Driver Version:8.17.12.5721
Digital Signer: MS Windows hardware Compatibility Publisher
So You are using this latest Nvidia driver.
Could You reinstall it?
This way we will check will this problems (pixelated, distorted screen and system hang) show up again or not.
Process will look like this:
- Uninstall in standard way Nvidia driver from system.
Resource:
Uninstalling Software in Windows 7
Uninstall or change a program in Windows 7
- Restart your system. On boot press F8 and choose safe mode. Use Driver Sweeper to uninstall all this thigs which left in your system from this driver. Here You will find out from where You may download this software and how to use it.
- Run your system normally this time. Go to device manager and check is your graphic listed under display adapters or not:
a) If it's listed there: Reboot your system -> Safe Mode. Go to device manager. In display adapter category click with right button of your mouse on graphic card there and choose uninstall. Reboot your system start it normally. Now You should see in device manager ' Video Controller (compatible with VGA) ' with yellow exclamation mark ( ). Install this latest Nvidia driver.
b) If it's not listed and You've got there ' Video Controller (compatible with VGA) ' with yellow exclamation mark ( ) then install this latest Nvidia driver.
- Check how it works.

Hi Daniel,
I followed your instruction and everything works just fine now. But I have noticed that the Windows Experience Index remains the same score on this new driver. I used to have 3.2 on Vista Home Premium 32-bit with its driver, and only 2.9 on Windows 7 with this driver. Is it normal?
Notes: On the next boot after Safe Mode, the machine still detects the card as "Nvidia 8400M GS" (not standard VGA) but with "!" mark. I then install this new driver and all is OK
Best,
James

One thing I have also noticed that the Call of Duty - Modern Warfare, often crashes on this newly release driver (.257) than that of the old one.
So far the only solution is to run the game under safe mode, which is offered by the game every time the system crashes.
Any other idea?
Best,

So You are getting BSOD?
If yes then go to:
C:\WINDOWS\Minidump
and compress all files from there into one file with 7zip(free) or WinRar.
Upload this file on any server (example: MediaFire) and in your next reply paste link to it.
This way we will try to find out what is causing this BSOD issue.

Hi Daniel,
Strange that when I chek minidump folder, it is empty!
But I am sure it related to Nvidia Graphic card as one time, on BSOD it said something like "nvcdd...", I could not remember exactly but I knew it is Nvidia.
And also, everytime I had this BSOD, the temperature of the card is around 92 celcius!!!

If it's casuing high temperature then I recommend to uninstall it as quick as it possible. Return to this driver version which is posted in guide. Use this uninstallation procedure which was already posted by me above.
Check temps again.
One more thing. Are You using latest DirectX version?
You may get it from here.
Edit:
Here on nVidia forum You will find other BSOD reports from users about this latest drivers.
I'm now sure then I will stay with 197.16 version in guide.

Hi Daniel,
So I took your advice and reinstalled Nvidia 197.16 version. Things went smooth for a while and the temperature seems to stable under 60 celcius. Now, another fatal problem crops up again
When I run Firefox to watch some of the "Quick start Tutorial" (flash-based movies) from Avid website, all of sudden the screen turned completely black while the audio was still playing!!! I have to shutdown the laptop by pressing the Power button. I checked the Event Viewer and there is some info about this problem:
Event ID: 4104 - Display Driver Timeout Detection and Recovery
Detail could be found here on Technet website: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd349439%28WS.10%29.aspx
Thinking this could be cause by incompatible Flash Player, I download the uninstaller and remove the Flash Player, then install the latest one. Problem still persist!!!:smileymad:
Any ideas???
James

Go to event viewer and clear all logs from there.
Download Adobe Flash Uninstaller.
Swicth off all browsers.
Run this file.
Go to Adobe site and install latest Flash version.
Try to watch again this tutorials.
If again you will have this situation with black screen go to event viewer and check is this error there or not.
Have You got this problem with movies on YouTube too or is it only problem with this specific site?
06-22-2010 01:35 AM
Hi Daniel,
Yes, I did uninstall (using uninstaller from Adobe) and reinstall the Flash Player for Firefox. However, the problem still persists and occur from time to time.
Worse yet, every time I go to Windows Index Experience and try to re-access the hardware, the screen becomes scattered, pixellated, distorted and will lead to a system hang/frozen that need a Power button!
Also, is there any connection between Display driver and Audio driver? I have seen in Nvidia folder 2 sub-folders: one for graphic and the other for audio. Just wonder if they have anything to do with each other...
Regarding to the Flash-based video playback, Youtube website appears to be a little bit more stable than other (embeded Flash-based), but it still crashes from time to time!!
I doubt my hardware has a problem... This laptop has been around for more than 3 years already... Is there any software check for hardware-error?
Cheers,
JN
