Has anyone found a fix for this yet?  I too have the exact same problem mentioned in this post.  My wireless button now controls airplane mode only and I can't turn wireless on/off

Hello yankfan.  Did you try the steps I posted on page 5?  I've pasted them below.

The way that the wireless button works is a little different in Windows 8.  Pressing the wireless button deactivates/activates Airplane Mode even on a brand new Windows 8 notebook.  However, turning airplane mode on/off only disables the radios but doesn't actually put the devices into a disabled state.  Try the following.

  1. From the Metro view type "wireless."
  2. You should then see "settings" on the right.  Select this and it will populate many wireless related items on the left side of the screen.
  3. Select "wireless" from this section.
  4. You should see a few options.  One being "Airplane mode" and the others being an on/off switch for bluetooth and/or wireless.
  5. Ensure that both of these are turned on while airplane mode is off.
  6. Save changes and reboot.

After doing this when you press the wireless button it should enable/disable the wireless.

I hope this is helpful; have a great evening!

This did the trick!!!!  I knew how to set wireless on in Win 7, but didn't know how to in Win 8.  Not sure why it was changed to have the wireless button only control airplane mode now, that was very frustrating.  Anyway, thank you very much for you help and I now have wireless again!!

To the ones that the trick worked, probably they have new computers. Mine isfrom March 2012 and that trick doesnt work. THE TOGGLE SWITCHES ARE GREY AND CAN'T BE CHANGED.

below is driver update 1.0.6.1, all previously referenced driver versions were 1.0.5.1. I installed it but still same problem. I'm exhausted with the problem, maybe some angel would like to experiment with it some more. Or maybe hunt around for an even newer version (i just googled along the lines of "hp wireless button" 1.0.6*, and so forth).

HP, GET THIS SH*T TAKEN CARE OF.

I tried that newer driver but still the same. It just toggles on or off the airplane mode.

I think HP didnt do any driver for Windows 8 so far for the Pavilion DV7.

I'll never buy an HP product again. Also, my computer is still new and the space bar doesn't work properly.

I tried doing this but when I choose "Wireless" from settings nothing shows up but "no wireless devices are available" it doesn't give me any option anywhere for airplane mode it on/off switches... ..?

Hi,

The reason was static current in the wifi button. which was making it non responsive(it was red all the time). What you have to do is to shutdown your laptop, remove the battery and AC power and any other peripheral, press the start button for 45 seconds to release any static current, and then start the laptop with AC (no battery).

I did all that and my wifi button start working and it started taking the connections. So it seems the wifi is fully dependent on the wifi button im my case

Hello StazTheVampire.

Does your wireless work at all?  That would imply that the operating system has not detected any wireless networking devices.

What notebook are you using?  You likely need to install the proper drivers.  If you provide me with your product number I will try to locate the drivers for you.  This document can show you where the number is located.

Have a great day!
