I have updated the bios with latest version (F.26) and the Wireless button (f12) stop working 😞

After that I go to Device Manager -> Network adapter -> Ralink RT5390R .... -> Properties -> Advanced and enable Radio On/Off.

Now everything works properly.

Hi,

One trick worked for me.

First i uninstalled the HP Driver Button software which was suggested.

Then i  uninstalled the Device driver for Wifi.

Restarted my System

And then it  found a device as an unknown device. and it self took its default drivers and started working.

Hope it helps !!!!

yes i installed the software you recommended. and it work on my laptop.. but there is one problem.....
the problem is I pressed the F10 button and it turn orange and airplane mode on signal is displayed ie no communication. NOw i restart my notebook...
after restart complete... when i looked to my wireless button it has turned to white instead of orange.(orange is default indicator before i restart and after restart it turn to white automatically) when i see to my network it is still in airplane mode on but indicator is white....... now when i again press my adapter button it show airplane mode off and indicator is still white..... now lastly i press wireless button it now turned to orange.......... it happen when my laptop wake up from sleep. every time i power my notebook i have to press F10 button twice to make it orange....... it does not happen before upgrade.......... now solve this problem

I have the exact same problems and I have spent two weeks reading everything in this thread and many other similar ones that cover a period of more than a year now that users have been posting about this issue.

All of the obvious fixes do not work for me. Things that do NOT work are:

  • Install HP Wireless Button. It just does something with airplane mode, but the light stays orange. The WiFi "switch" is greyed out on the screen and not active.
  • Re-setting the BIOS to defaluts. Updating the BIOS to the latest version. None of that works.
  • Reinstalling or updating wireless drives for Intel Centrion N2230 wireless driver.
  • Fiddling around in network properties to un-tick a power management box.
  • Using the normal trouble shooting applications. Everything just comes back to say "wireless is turned off" but nothing can help me turn it on.
  • Going into Device Manager and disenabling certain drivers, uninstalling them, reinstalling them, updating them and a whole lot more. I still got nothing.
  • My machine Pavilion dv7-7120ei is still under guarantee. I logged a support ticket with HP. Not even the courtesy of a reply.
  • When I bought the machine there was a lot of point of sale promotion that offered special deals to upgrade to Win 8.
  • Now that I upgrade to Win 8 it does not work.
  • In some forums I see that it may be possible to roll back to Win 7, but that it is difficult and risky.
  • I have just bought a Belkin USB wireless dongle and that at least enables me to identify and connect wirelessly. But that is just a poor fix for a problem that might great minds of HP and Microsoft should be able to repair.

It seems amazing to me that HP and Microsoft between them are happy to sell this stuff but appear totally unable and unwilling to provide fixes that work. Where I live, this machine costs a lot in local currency. It is possible to just throw the thing in the trash after less than 8 months and buy another brand. I will not be bankrupt, but I feel robbed and exploited by this system.

hi, i have a dv6-7012tx and i had the same problem for a long time. Nothing in this thread worked for me.

What i did was install the f.26 bios, restart windows, press f12, then go to settings from the charms bar, you will see wireless option there. if wifi and bluetooth are still greyed out try f12 again and see if it changes. it did for me. hope it works for u all.

Just ran monthly Microsoft Windows monthly update on my Win8 HP laptop. The update changed functionality of the wireless icon in the system tray. Previously when I pressed the F12 wireless key it would toggle Airplane mode off and on (button LED would always stay white except coming out of sleep mode) and the icon in system tray would so indicate 9dispalying a static bar graph icon or an airplane icon. But now just shows the static bar graph icon no matter if toggle airplane mode on. Thankfully the HP On-Screen Display (OSD) continues to display correctly when toggling airplane mode. Obviously Microsoft and HP engineers don't talk to each other very well. And I've concluded HP does not support one year old products well.

Hello HpTreeFrog,

What is your product number?  Did you upgrade to Windows 8 or did it come already installed?
