So I've used Instant Ink for years. I didn't mind it too much but a 33% price increase for the 50 page plan is just a joke. As such I've decided to no longer use it. Will I need to throw my printer into the bin now or can it still work once the next billing cycle starts?

This is on top of last year's 50% increase, so it has, in effect, doubled from £1.99 for 50 pages to £3.99. A blatant rip off of loyal customers. You can't even end the contract without them remotely stopping the use of the current cartridges.

Yeah, come on guys, this is terrible. And that canned response, what's that about? Choices? Yeah, we based our choice of buying a HP product on the costs of buying it, and running it at the time it was purchased - and perhaps a reasonable consideration for inflation price increases (even at it's worst, inflation hasn't come anywhere near HPs idea of it).

Just saying we have the choice whether to carry on with the subscription or not is an awful response - so what do I do with the printer I own If I choose not to?

I can own a car, but also choose whether to fill it with fuel!

Sorry, but this isn't good enough. Everybody is hitting us with price increases for sure, but as a percentage, this is by far the worst.

Of course £1 isn't what you'd call a lot of money, but the principle matters just the same. I've gone from spending £24 a year on cartridges, to £48 in the space of less than 2 years.

This is now much less attractive as an option, I got my Instant Ink Cartridges 18 months ago, and they're still at 50%, which make them *really* expensive now.

No, not good. I will be reconsidering everything now.

Cheers, and Merry Christmas to you HP.

I've been a subscriber for 5 years but this increase is the one that has made me cancel. Thanks but no thanks HP.

I'm out too.  If i divide up the yield of a black cartridge with its cost its less than the new 50pg subscription (Which I underuse to begin with).  There is no value in being a subscriber anymore and I'll replace the printer with a different brand.

You do of course have to try and estimate the value of the extra capacity that the Instant Ink cartridges contain. There doesn’t seem to be any specification listed, but it does appear to be significantly more than standard, or even XL cartridges that you buy separately.

My usage fluctuates quite a bit, but over the last few months it’s pretty stable, and I think I can manage on the 10page option instead. Even that is getting a 50% increase too, but at £1.50/mth, and I continue using the same cartridges, it seems to make sense to do that for now.

However, HP has soured the experience considerable over the last couple of years, and particularly with this recent bout of cost rise battering. Even though I have successfully changed my subscription, they’re still charging me the old price for another month, and I lose 120 pages of rollover.

OK, I get that T&Cs are T&Cs, and all that, and of course legal, but IMHO it’s still very unsportsmanlike behaviour anyway.

And guess who were the only people to take money off me on Christmas Day?

Cheers HP.

Same here. Multiple price increases over the last 2-3 years. HP likely doesn’t care if people cancel, as many will probably just buy highly-overpriced HP cartridges at retail. I’ve cancelled my HP Instant Ink plan and won’t be buying HP cartridges. The only way to send a message that these repeated price increases are unacceptable is for people to avoid HP cartridges altogether.

Just had my email from HP and had to come here and add my voice.  It arguably still works out well for us (not done the maths on cartridge costs/duration) but a 33% increase (or even 50% if on a different plan) seems over the top and at least in part done just to keep the prices looking nice on the matrix (2.99 to 3.29 would still look good though!!).

HP Recommended

The best thing for people to do is cancel their Instant Ink subscriptions and buy non-HP replacement cartridges. HP is counting on people either paying the higher Instant Ink prices or buying HP replacement cartridges, which are even bigger ripoffs. They win in either scenario. The only way they’ll get the message is if they lose ink business totally.
