I am wanting to print on some thicker paper. I saw that the specs say up to 72lbs which does not help much due to the difference in paper. It says 90 gsm for A4, which I am guessing means that the printer cannot print on Cardstock. It says it can do up to 250 gsm on 10x15cm photo paper. Do you think this also means 4x6in index cards?
I would like to know:
- If anyone has experience printing cardstock on this printer.
- Would this printer support 4x6in index cards at 250 gsm?
- Is there any other information about how I can print something a bit thicker than standard text paper

@Noc-Pigeon, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
The HP ENVY 7640 e-All-in-One Printer is indeed capable of handling a variety of paper types, including some thicker options. However, as you've noticed, the specifications can be a bit confusing due to the variety of paper descriptions and weights.
Cardstock and Heavy Paper
- Compatibility: While the printer's specifications suggest it can handle up to 90 gsm for A4 and 250 gsm for 10x15 cm photo paper, this does not directly translate to all cardstocks. Most cardstocks fall within 176 gsm to 300 gsm, so printing on heavier cardstock (over 250 gsm) can be challenging.
- Experience with Cardstock: Users have reported varying degrees of success with cardstock. The key is ensuring compatibility with the specified maximum weights. Some cardstocks, especially those closer to the 250 gsm limit, may print without issue, but results can vary based on the paper type and brand.
Printing on 4x6-inch Index Cards
- Support: Index cards typically range from about 200 gsm to 300 gsm. If the printer's specifications allow for 250 gsm on 10x15 cm photo paper, it should technically support similarly structured 4x6-inch index cards, provided they do not exceed the weight limitation.
Tips for Success
- Test Pages: Before committing to a large print job, it's advisable to print a test page to ensure the printer feeds the paper correctly without jamming.
- Paper Settings: Always adjust your printer settings to match the paper type being used. You can set it to the closest heavier weight option available.
- Manual Feed: Manually feeding thicker paper may improve results and reduce the risk of jams.
I hope this helps.
